Gav 1,708
I was talking to sportingshooter06 early this morning and mentioned this article published in the Stornoway Gazzete on thursday, sportingshooter06 wanted a look so here it is, I thought I would make a post of it and share it with any one else that was interested. SportingShooter 0
Thanks Gav, I enjoyed that. Its good to see the Mink problem up there is being taking so seriously, wish it was here. As the article says they are voracious killers and will stop at nothing, and think nothing of killing hundreds or thousands of the many rare and breeding birds up there. Thanks again Gav, good of you to inform us. Regards SS Quote Link to post

There's no way we could tell just how long it would take them to check that many with the terrain up there being so varied. I imagine it would take and awful long time to check even four or five traps located on a peat hag. As long as the mink numbers are going down then does it really matter? The one 8,504
I remember a while ago these jobs where advertised and i heard they went to mates of mates and as a result its costing £1000's per mink trapped Quote Link to post
Gav 1,708
The thing up here is they are locating them out on the moor/bog which is only accessible by foot, even I have trouble getting to my peat banks with a tractor and that's got bog wheels on, I recently sank it just going to collect the peats. alimac 882
il tell you that even with a quad checking 35 cages takes a fecking long time, with no more than 2 cages per mile of water course.. there doing a similar thing here in the cairngorms, they send them all away for dna testing and look at the bitch minks inards to see how many young it has had in the past, one gobsmacking fact (as shooting times readers will know) is that two mink were caught, one on the spey and one on the iythan(sp), litter sisters, 96 km apart Quote Link to post

FELLAS WERENT AS SNAREMAN SAYS , STUCK WITH A DONKEY MENTALITY ALL THE BEST DUCKWING I know here you won't get a quad out on the bog, well you would but you would not get far with out it sinking. There are a few bog tractors out there still, lost under the peat bog, total submersed, you can't even see where they are. You wouldn't even want to walk out there unless you know the area and what to look for, i.e where to stand, walk etc. The peat bog is a dangerous place even for the experienced! I think a lot of you are jumping in without an understanding of the terrain up here. Quote Link to post

A TRAPPER WOULD TRAP WITHIN EASY WALKING DISTANCE OF THE BRIDGES / ROADS / TRACKS WHICH CROSS THE LAND AND THEREFORE WATERWAYS , GANG SET AT THE BRIDGES AND JUNCTIONS OF WATER WAY INLETS .... IE , AREAS WHICH WILL BE OF A GREATER ATTRACTION TO THE MINK ............ THEREFORE A TRAPPER CAN COVER A GREATER AMOUNT OF WATERWAY MILEAGE AND CHECK A GREATER AMOUNT OF TRAPS MAKING THE PERCENTAGE OF HIS CATCH FAR LARGER , HOPE I MADE MYSELF CLEARER ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
