Miroku MK38 grade 1 sporter steel shot proof?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this sport,

I recently bought a miroku MK38 Grade 1 sporter from the local gun shop and the shopkeeper told me it was steel shot proof.

I bought 500 steel shot cartridges 24gm sz7 and 500 lead and used 100 of them to shoot clays

after cleaning it out there appears to be small chips inside the barrells

I only put them through the bottom barrel as the top one is choked 3/4

The barrel is marked 2 3/4" chamber special steel,

Does anybody have this gun? and if so is it steel shot compatable? I don't see the fleur de lis on it but other Miroku's

don't either,

Can anybody help?

If you can take some close up pictures of the proof marks then I can tell you if it is actually Steel Proofed , you can post them on here or PM me whichever you prefer.

I have an MK38 Trap Gr 1 and it hasn't got the Fleur de Lis either.

However, the cartridges which you are using are suitable for ALL modern proofed 2 3/4" guns and No-way should there be any marks or chips in the barrel.

How long have you had the gun? And how long between cleanings did you leave it?

The "Special Steel" marks are just he material the barrels are made from.

The ShopKeeper, if the gun turns out to be not steel shot proofed, has made a grave error in misleading you as High Performance steel would take your gun over the pressure it has been proofed for.

Hope this helps.

Hope you can see this if not I can email you it my address is rondo@supanet.com

I bought the gun second hand and I assume somebody had been firing it as when I looked down the barrels when

i bought it it needed a good clean, I have only fired 100 cartridges through it which made me wonder if the steelshot was damaging it?

The marks there are exactly the same as on my gun so, no they are not Specifically proofed for steel shot.

But they will be able to fire the Cartridges that you have as they are "Standard" steel and so can be fired in any gun which is in proof for the chamber length on the box, normally 2 3/4"

They only thing I can think of to explain the Chips in the barrel is that the previous owner must have very seriously neglected it and the barrels have become pitted. To pit a Chrome barreled gun and one which is not that old is quite hard.

The Gunshop owner should have put a rod through it before he bought it to see if this was evident.

Which shop did you buy it from?

If it is pitted, then I seriously suggest you take it back to the shop you bought it from and ask for your money back.

If the pitting is serious then it may even be out of proof in which case he has committed an illegal act by selling it to you.

It will be damn near impossible for you to photograph the inside on the barrels but if you want to try then by all means post them.

Try and give me a description of what these chips look like to you. Are they like clusters of dents in the barrel?

Hello again ss

Many thanks for your advice,

It is very hard to tell as looking down the barrel they are so small someone suggested to me this could be plastic residue in the barrells which is very stubborn to get off but I'm sure the marks are going internal not external, it looks like a long skid with small pit marks along the barrells I'd better not name and shame the gun shop yet, I'm going back to my local club next week so hopefully some expert eye's can have a look at it, I've got 450 steel shots left don't think

I'll be buying any more or might end up giving them away!!!

Honestly, it will be extremely unlikely to be anything to do with the cartridges.

Try this tip to remove the plastic(if it is plastic)

Buy a can of Carbeuretta Cleaner, 151 brand I use. Roll up a sheet of kitchen towel and stuff one piece in each barrel at the breach end.

Spray a liberal amount of the cleaner down the muzzles of each barrel and leave it to soak for 24 hours.

Push the kitchen roll down with a rod, inspect and if there is plastic the majority will be gone. If some remain, push a bronze brush up and down the barrels several times and then re-spray and push some more kitchen towel down after about 30 mins. This will clear any residue that is left there. If some remains then it is more permanent and ultimately more serious.

And most certainly let some eye's look at it next week.

P.S. Make sure the barrel is absolutely bone dry of cleaner before you fire it or there will a loud bang as the barrels blow.

Hello again SS

I visited my local Halfords they did not have Carb cleaner so I got a can of Birchwood casey bore scrubber from ebay

and sprayed liberally into barrels and left to soak, eventually after an hour of hard cleaning and scrubbing the marks

have all dissapeared so obviously has been plastic or lead residue which has not came off when I was cleaning it out with WD40,

Many thanks for the correct advice I'm now very relieved to know I have not damaged my beloved miroku,

as I said I'm a total beginner and all these things have to be learned,,

Thanks again

Typical of Halfords, why I don't go there

Glad you got all the marks out, I kinda thought it would be hard pressed plastic, its very hard to pit these Miroku's.

Just clean it each time now and you'll be fine.

Good Luck
