neautering working dogs

Recommended Posts

Hey all ,my border dog is 16 months old and is showing good propects. problem though one of his testicles hasnt dropped. Apparently there is a high risk of testicular cancer in the undecended testicle. If I have him castrated, will this effect his working ability?

hear this happening with borders quite often, i dunno if it can cause caner mate see a vet about that part, but a guy i know is a hunt terrier man he was given a border that had allready been castrated the lady didnt want it because it was too highly strung i think so he took it on and its a f****n demon on foxes so i dont think this will effect the working part of it if your worried about this.

i dont think it would have any affect on the dog accept you wouldent be able to breed off him

Just a question, Do people not get their dogs neutered to calm them down and stop them being aggressive? Does removing the muts nuts not reduce the amount of certain hormones produced therefore reducing their aggression? If this is so would it not have an affect on how the dog would or would not work? :hmm:

Eamon, different people have different theories on this, some say that the lack of Testosterone will change the dogs state of mind, some say it just stops them breeding.I have no experience of neutered working dogs,so cant really comment, but if i had a choice i'd leave a dog "intact" unless itwas detrimental to its health.

hello mate, i hada a similiar problem about 12years ago both of my pats balls didnt drop but you could feel them still up there went to 2 vets to see if they could one said had to castrate him the other which is now my permanent vet said that i didnt have to but i would have to keep an eye on them and if they changed in size shape etc i would have to take him in to have em off. Luckily nothing has happened so far and he is coming up 12 yrs old and still working. If i was you i would just keep an eye on them and take it from there

A little anecdotal evidence.. Only ONE example but it convinced me. I have a lurcher ( 1/2 whippet-1/4 border collie and 1/4 russell) He is intact. The person who bred the litter kept the pick male but had him castrated. we got them together a few years later and we worked em together. Mine was bigger, stronger , faster and more aggressive on game. I believe the reduction in testosterone DOES have a negative effect, but thats just an opinion. And besides what are you gonna do when the dog is a demon and you wanna put him to a good bitch?

My understanding is that there is an increased risk of cancer in retained testicles.

Can the vet feel the retained one at all, sometimes you can, othertimes they are well up inside the dog,and can be difficult for the vet to locate.

Borders who are neautered tend to loose their coats ,often go all soft and fluffy - some can't be stripped afterwards.Don't know who important that is to you.

I'd think about just having the retained one removed.

I personally would't want to breed from a dog with a retained testicle, just in case.
