Do barrels need cleaned?

Recommended Posts

Air rifle barrels will benefit from a clean but there is not the requirement for cleaning as associated with, rimfires, centrefires and shotguns.

Much of the crud up the barrel of these will be propellant residue (often corrosive) and copper deposits!

The air rifle does not suffer from this, firing predominantely lead/alloy pellets with no propellant. This is soft and causes very limited damage, and "tends" to leave VERY little residue up the barrel.

However, you still need to keep the rifling and crown in good condition to maintain optimum accuracy, so a good clean from "time to time" would be worthwhile!

To be honest with you (and I don't say this lightly, mind) but i don't tend to clean my barrel if the accuracy remains true.

When i have chosen to clean my barrel, the thing i found most useful is . . . . beleive it or not . . . those little filter tips you get for making roll ups. Yes, its true. I would advise you to go for the 'Swan' make as well, and not a barstood make.

What i do is roll a filter between my finger and thumb to compress it down to fit my barrel, and then insert it at the breach face, slide the bolt home and then fire the rifle. It has worked well for me when i have done this, and it doesn't harm the barrel at all. You can just put the filter tip only in the barrel - there is no need at all for a pellet to be loaded up the arse end of the filter neither! Lol

Plus, i think the filter tips are cheaper than buying 'foam' type barrel cleaning pellets, like? If you see what i mean ;)

Just a little tip from me that i hope you'll find useful. :)

Grim.

Good method! I put a few drops of 3 in 1 down the barrel, then shoot a load of those tips down it. :gunsmilie: (When I haven't got a cleaning kit to hand!)

To Maltenby - I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in the use of these roll up filter tips, i really do find they are good for cleaning the barrel.

To Droid - no worries fella - glad to see you think my suggestion worth a try bud.

Umm . . . . . . there is, of course, another good use for them - particularly in a springer for use indoors . . . . . ;)

Now then, what you can use them in a springer indoors for is this:

If you see (in the current weather it is most definately see them) a couple of flies or blue bottles flying around indoors, simply load one of the filter tips up the pipe of the springer and close the barrel up. Take aim at said fly or blue bottle once it lands on something, and FIRE!

Bye Bye fly!!! :laugh::laugh::laugh:

It works a treat, it don't damage any furnishings or breakables, and is brilliant in a household where you have say, an asthma sufferer because there are no chemicals (such as those that are found in fly killer sprays) or vapours that can kick off an asthma attack, see!? Lol

I know, i know, what a silly idea for a grown man to have . . . . . . but still great fun nonetheless!

Grim.
