First call this rut

Invited down to Martins patch last Thursday evening for a stalk and i took along the buttalo call .We were to stalk the same farm as we shot a few pigeons on a while back .Started the evening stalking along a hedge above a lane which divides the farm in two .Nothing in this field but as we crossed a gap ,looking down over the valley ,we could see a doe zig-zagging through a barley field and then a buck came into view ,following her every move .We both agreed he was a cullbuck so a stalk was planned .The shot wasnt practical from here so Martin chose a route that would take us somewhere near the pair .Over the lane ,around a copse and along a fence and we were at the bottem of the field .It had started to drizzle by now and i wasnt surprised to see the doe sat under a tree in the hedge line about 170 yards away .No sign of the buck but i knew he wasnt far .Got myself in a possition at the bottem of a gate and gave a peep on the buttalo.The does ears went up straight away and a few more peeps saw her on her feet and trotting down the hedge .The field they were in was partly cut and it was down the cut side that she came .Not to be left behind ,the buck appeared from behind the tree and fairly had to run to keep up .She stopped a couple of times just to pinpoint the sound but by keeping the peeps consistant she was hooked .She came to within 20 yards of my position and was so close she obscured the buck from my view.A few tense moments waiting for him to move clear of her and i took him in the chest .A mature beast but with a very poor head .

 

The bottem pic shows the tree that the doe was sat under and the gate in bottem left corner of the field that she lured the buck to .

Ive still never had a real chance to get out with the buttolo mate , hopefully this week . Well done , its the cream calling roe !!!

Good tale there FD. The right sort of buck to take out.

 

I used the call last Friday knowing there was a good buck to take out in the area I was in. Unfortunately I had two does trot over to me followed by the master buck - I thought I was outside of his territory. He is easily a bronze - hopefully if he is still about next season he will be a silver. I have seen him grow up from a spiker and he has a very noticeable scar on the top of his back leg - when I first saw it four years ago it was flapping open as a result with an encounter with a lurcher

 

Shall be very tempted next season to have a go at him as around my area silver is as much as we can hope for.
