30 CAL DEER RIFLE

Recommended Posts

:whistling: no hints on what to buy :wallbash: ah well

I think you probably need to be a bit more specific in your question.

Are you wanting us to choose a manufacture or calibre?

Sauer or Tikka, or is it .308 vs 300 wsm.

What's you budget?

When you say all rounder, whats the biggest and smallest quarry you are looking to hunt?

Is this a pre FAC application question? I notice on your other post you ask for Help obtaining info for DSC1.

If you are inexperienced, then it is best to state that in you post. It will help the members taylor the answer to your questions better.

If this is your first rifle, you may struggle to get "30cal".

There are many different .30cal varients.

.30 Carbine

.30 Newton

.30 Remington

.30 TC

.30-30 Winchester

.30-06 Springfield

.30-40 Krag(.30 Army)

.30-378 Weatherby Magnum

.300 Savage

.300 Remington SA Ultra Mag

.300 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum)

.300 Winchester Magnum

.300 H&H Magnum

.300 Weatherby Magnum

.300 Remington Ultra Magnum

.303 British

.303 Savage

.307 Winchester

.308 Marlin Express

.308 Norma Magnum

.308 Winchester (7.62 x 51 mm NATO)

to name but a few.

So you will understand the need for more info, i'm not being difficult. It was a very open ended question.

If it manufacturer, there will be as many answers too. Normally you get the question answered with the make that the poster has. Because they are not going to tell you to buy a remmy, and then buy a tikka themselves.

Lots of permutations there, you need to narrow it down a bit.

308 is as good a calibre as any. Ammunition is widely available from virtually every shop, normally with choice of bullet weight and type.

If you go to any of the other calibres, then you will be either ordering you own ammo from your current RFD, or you may be luck enough to have a big enough gun shop. I don t have such luxuary here.

Also .308 is a standard calibre for most manufacturers, so you have plenty to choose from. All the usual makers Tikka, Remmington, Howa, CZ, Browning. They will all have an ammo weight suitable for your task that will have inherant accuracy. That you will have to find out for yourself.

If you have a higher budget Sako make a nice .308, so do Sauer. I have .243 in Sauer, and have shot .308 in Sauer .Very good trigger, no modifications needed. I have also shot .308 in Tikka and was also impressed.

Hi all - I've a .243 for smaller stuff (Roe / Springbok) but for hat racks and antelope, I've a .308 and a 30-06.

The .308 is an old Ruger M77 Mk1 - great rifle, cheap as chips 2nd hand and with a decent scope (I use 6x42 zeiss) it's a great all-round gun and ammunition is easy to find and affordable, especially when we're not at war!

My .243 is a Weatherby Vanguard - it's a very cheap rifle with an excellent action from Howa - made in Japan. Now I'm not a big fan of the japanese in many ways, but their engineering is something else, and this Howa action is a prime example. That's why my 30-06 is a Howa 1500 Lightning - it's the same budget package as the Vanguard with a great action and so on, all for under £500 threaded!

So, my thoughts would be either 30-06 or .308 and rather than spend loads of £££ straight off, have a look at these Howa's - great value!

Hope that helps!

hi

i own a ruger 77 all weather in 3006 and i like it it works well. shoots well and not very expensive. i choose 3006 because i am living in sweden and moose and bear may be an option and old 06 with heavy bullets 200-220 grain would be better.

regards

.308 i would recommend for the simple reason many rifles are made in this calibre, it's got a great bullet choice, widely available, easy to reload if you take that path,

and is a proven accuracy round....... what more do you want than that.......

Hi Dan, Moose and Bear sounds like a nice combination - just to give you a flavour, this was me last night after an arduous evening 'Bunny Bashing'! I've a .22 rifle with a moderator that's ideal, plus an HW100 air rifle which is just as good! Hardly big game hunting but I thought it would give you a laugh!
