Just wondering do people lamp the hares...?

Personally i dont because i feel its too easy at night and nearly any dog could catch a hare at night.

Just wondering...???

This should spark some interest........ can you honestly say from a distance you can tell the difference between a squatting hare and a squatting rabbit????

This subject is gonna go on for as long as people go lamping, and the answers will always remain the same.......coursing lads will say its criminal to lamp a hare and the lamping boys will say they run just as hard....... :whistling::whistling: ......... my own personal experience tells me that every now and again, you're gonna get a run on one at night........ they aint stuid animals....thats why they're classed as the ultimate challenge for a dog...... the last time i saw a lamped hare, it was at the end of a hard night, one jumped up in front of the dogs walking back, and ran rings round the pair of them (both ecomplished daytime dogs) ran them round and round before giving them the slip, the end result was one had a seizure on the way home and was put down 2 days later...........at the beginning of the night it'd have been no probs, but it weren't and because of that the night ended in a bad way,.......... i'm not one for coursing, but enjoy it when the opportunity arrives, but i've seen good hares through the day and good ones through the night............. never lost a dog to a hare through the day but have at night, that doesn't make me say nightime hares are harder, just makes me say, that particular hare was a strong animal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a big fan myself Gary, though i'd be lying if I said I never but by the sound of that statement you've been reading to many Plummer books!

It is illegal in Ireland. I am glad that it is. It is totally unfair for the hare. The poor thing runs around blind in circles.

But that's what all the so called 'hunters' and coursing men do locally.

Stick to the rabbits and foxes for lamping, leave the hares for a good daytime course.

hares are much easier to take at night, had a lurcher few years back took his fair share of hares daytime,no worldbeater, first good night lamping hares took ten out of ten made it look easy could never do this in daytime.so i would say it doesnt take a good dog to kill a hare on the lamp, they make far to many mistakes.

if hares get the opatunity to escape once or twice then like a rabbit he becomes wise and will become difficult to catch so they can be hard to catch, ive seen daft hares also, other subterainiane animals become better quarry once worked to.

hares should only be run in the day time. thats how i was always taught to do it. Also i am a strong believer that is a crime to shoot a fox, so much more fair to run it with a dog. I suppose everyone has there own ways though.

If you work an area which is heavily lamped & the game is lampshy the hares aren't so easy & don't run around blindly in circles. We find they have their route illuminated & know where they are going & try & flatline the dogs. In our areas 'any lurcher' wouldn't catch these hares. No disrespect to the coursers either but some of the DVDs I've seen alot of the slips have been less than 30yds & the dogs have pissed around for 4 -5mins, understandable when given a 100yd slip. I do like to see a lurcher run a hare but not on the open fens. Seen some good runs on higher ground where the the dog has fences etc to negotiate.

About the only time I've really ran hares on the lamp is early in the season with a young dog.

As for easy, and any old mut can catch lamped hares.....I've seen some good dogs get done by these '' easy hares''

as said they know their route.

it is illegal this time of year but id prefer rabbits as it is a longer and beater chase for the dog

i would disagree a bunny does not give longer and better chase than a hare even on the lamp well not were im from anyway

runs around blind in circles ??? dont talk such sentimental nonsence ... what of the rabbits and foxes then ??? its ok for them in your words ''to run around blind in circles'' is it ? why is the hares any more important than the rabbit or fox .... if one gets up infront of my dog then its as fair game as a rabbit ...........

ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE AND HUNTING ..........

How can you call a blinded hare fair game?

I can guarantee you it is much easier to catch a hare on the lamp as it dosent know where its going round and round in circles untill it gives up... You must be easily pleased socks...Stick to the rabbits and foxs on the lamp. :wallbash:
