indiana 1
Hunting with ferrets is not very common here in the states, In fact I think it is illeagle. Hypothetically, What would a fellas chances be of raising a couple ferrets out of pet stock and having them turn out to be usefull? While I'm asking besides rabbits, what quarry are ferrets effective on. Quote Link to post

stubby 175
that would really surprise me if its illegal to use ferrets for flushing rabbits over there, its ok to go buy a gun, and use it to protect your home(lucky gits) but, hunt a bunny with a fert and its a no no as stated some use them here on rats, but you'd need to check out, if its the using of ferrets to flush any animal thats illegal, or just if used on rabbits cant see why, if you pick up some young kitts, that they would'ent be ok to use, older pets that have been treated purely as pets may stick their noses up at a hole, Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
Well you have to start someplace so getting a few ferrets & working them , then breed what you think have worked best next season or whenever Quote Link to post

Check with your Local DNR ... if they dont have any SPECIFIC answers... you may be ok if you're allowed to use hunting dogs in your area, under the same sorta conditions.. as for using ferrets from pet stock.. its possible.. though i'd tend to go through a private breeder so that you can have late alters... the early neutering done with pet ferrets in the states tends to leave them permenantly immature and kittish... not to mention more likely to ferret illnesses such as insolinoma, adrenal and lymphoma.. i would really be interested in hearing more if you find you ARE allowed to use ferrets there! My husband and i are tentatively thinking of moving back to the states at some point..but we'd hate to give up the sport! Quote Link to post
The one 8,459
Yes i thought even keeping ferrets in some state's was illegal andthe one's that let you keep ferrets wanted them descented never mind putting them to ground for rabbits Quote Link to post

California bans them completely because of an old ruling that they were wild animals. Hawaii is very stringent on ANY animals being introduced to their ecosystem and has banned them as well.. NYC (NOT the whole state) has banned them and a couple of the BIG cities in the south Dallas and Atlanta i think .. require a license and neuter/descenting... for the most part the early neuter and descenting of ferrets in the states is a consumer grabber.. ie.. make em ready made perfect pets ... easy to get a hold of and you have to keep coming back to US for them because you cant breed... That and the price tags lol Quote Link to post

I wouldn't think rats would be under the same protection. rats are what I'd like to try the ferrets on. I would think only the smallest of ferrets would be able to work on rats. Im I correct in that line of thought? Thank you all for the responses. Quote Link to post
