comanche 3,061
One of my Dad's friend Ron -a chap well into his 70's-has recently revived his interest in air-rifle shooting, mainly to deal with the squirrels that are wrecking bird feeders and nibbling his soffets. Sensible guy .His garden slopes steeply uphill, retained at the bottom by a 5or 6 foot high wall . All his squirrel shooting and target shooting is done from an upstairs window down towards the base of the wall. A neighbour from a house diagonally behind the guy's garden sent the police round claiming that Ron had hit one of their downstairs upvc window frames causing a crack and that they had found a pellet (what are the chances of that!)on their rockery. The copper knew a bit about guns which helped. Ron showed him his set-up and even proved that his old rifle was incapable of even denting upvc at short range. Then there was the fact that the pellet would've had to have risen about forty feet in the air ,passed through a shed, greenhouse ,conifer hedge and feather-edge fence before dropping sharply down to hit the window-frame in question . A distance in a straight line of about 60 yards. Strange also that the claiments had just had recently taken -down some scaffolding Heavy metal poles ,boards an stuff all banging about next to the house.... The Copper had noted that the pellet produced by the so-called victim had not been fired (no rifling marks) and was a flat-head. Ron 's pellets were domed. Basicly the comlainant or his builders had probably damaged his own window accidently and was trying to claim a new window from Ron and wanted a crime number to back his case. Thanks to the fact that Ron was shooting sensibly and legally and the fact that the Copper knew his stuff it is now the other home-owner who could be in trouble. Moral;make sure you are squeaky clean if you use an air-rifle in your garden. And if you try an insurance fraud at least find out what sort of pellet the other guy is using. Grim Reaper 1
That is the typical response (the other homeowner, i mean) from the ignorant, I'm afraid - "Oooh, I've got a good idea, let's try and blame it on the air rifle bloke!" Fair play to your friend Ron for getting it 100% right, and proving himself not at fault - as well as getting a very fair plod, who (as a bonus) knows something of the air rifles capabilities!! I'll drink to that! I hope the other twat gets nothing for his trouble. All the best, Grim Quote Link to post
Coney 3
The Wa*kers next door should have been done for wasting police time and pursuing a fraudulent insurance claim. Quote Link to post
