Even if you train a pup at home or in a restricted place and its ok, it can all go out the window when out in the field. Good luck. Edited July 29, 2008 by leegreen Quote Link to post
Jim Grant 4
took sasha over the farm she is 7 months old,but had trouble getting her back when i called her ,any tips on recall training thanks .reg With the pup at 7 months you should be well into the old basic discipline. My version is to get the animal to sit/stay in the garden or pen and then give your usual recall whistle together with a hand signal, I use the open palm to the dog with my arm lowered. Dont let them away with it and if they start to mess about make them sit , take them back to where they had been and start all over again. Praise the dog when it does it properly, make a fuss of it. Then make it sit at your heel and praise again. There is a school of thought that says you should get the dog a treat when it comes in. I don't. Don't let it run around wild and not listen to you. If you don't put the work into the dog it won't do what you ask it later. Make it sit when you put down its food, little things like that. If its on a lead then it does not pull. Bags of work and bage of luck with it. Quote Link to post
treebeard 0
First decide on what you will use for recall "name + Come" or whistle, stick to it, always praise the dog when it comes, never chastise the dog however long it has taken to come. Turn away and ignore dog when it doesn’t come (you have to make certain that the dog is in a safe place when training starts) you can even start to walk away. You can sometimes give the dog a treat and praise when it comes but not always. When come to recall reliable you can call and Whistle until it will respond to both or ether. I find an acme silent dog whistle will bring a trained dog in from greater distances than a call. It’s also less embarrassing than steady about in the woods call when there is no dog to be seen.
