my sons first gun

Recommended Posts

He's a lucky lad, I was nearly 20 before I had my first shotgun. I would have loved one like that. Just one thing though, he looks in the pictures as if he's trying to sight with his right eye? I know the pics are posed, and he is not actually shooting, but even a .410 will bruise your face if not held correctly.

Well done same as my first gun & i still have a bakial & my 5yrs old daughter says its hers now. You will have to check his eye dominince & maybe cut stock like mine was when i was 10yrs old. Kept the other bit of stock & is back on has been for 15yrs or so.

Perfect gun for a keen young beginner. I really approve of the single barrel as it puts the brakes on the automatic second shot and makes them concentrate on making the most of the first... also saves you a boat load on .410 cartridges ;)

Almost everyone i know started with a .410 as a nipper on pigeons

Edited to say it looks like an inch or so could do with being taken off the stock which, as V-MAX says, you can always put back on. Hope you have years of fun sharing a hide teaching him.

Just got my son his first gun a little 4/10 and he bloody loves it.He shot his first pigeon so hes made up.

410 for pigeon shooting???

Just wondering why you ask the question? I say, why not a .410 for pigeon? As long as you remember the slightly limited range and shot load a .410 is great for most things. In this case it's a young lad setting out on his field sports life, better to start with a gun he can handle than struggle to lift and swing dad's 12 bore.

Well i just thought a 12 bore would be easier to hit a pigeon with as i have allways thought .410 was for duck's and geese?

I think you're a bit confused between the .410 and a 10 bore mate. A 12b, would be far too heavy for a young lad and would probably put him off with the recoil. The .410 is the baby of the shotgun world, although you can shoot water fowel with them you'd have to be pretty close as i've always found they need a little more shot that phesants or pigeon. A 10b is generally kept as a dedicated wildfoweling gun as it gives more poke at greater ranges.
