borderland 0
first of this is not a " my dog is better than yours thread " . I read alot on here about which crosses different people believe work and was wondering which type of lurcher every1 thought was better for each quarry. In my own opinion I believe the best for each are Rabbiting: collie/ greyhound simply because they have brains and when ferreting and bushing for rabbits I have noticed they use their heads much more than their eyes, sometimes prempting the bolt or break from cover. foxing: Would have to say the majority of my foxing dogs had/have bull in them. the main reason being toughness. In saying that I also like to have a bit of collie in there as they raise the stupidty level of the bull/greyhound cross. Bull crosses tend to drive in too hard and if they miss are 8 or 9 strides away , whereas collie crosses tend to be more controlled and pick their spot. hares: ( have had little experience in this field but will give my opinion though it may carry little weight) 1 of the best hare dogs I have seen was a greyhound/deerhound/saluki with a bit of bull down the breeding. This is mainly huntin in Ireland where the fields tend to be much smaller and therefore its not normally as long so the dog needs to get in quick and stick with the hare to end it quick , rather than running it into submission as alot of the saluki crosses do over in scotland/wales/england. just my own opinions , would like to hear some of yours. cheers Edited July 28, 2008 by borderland Quote Link to post

borderland 0
What about deer ? we dont get many roe or small deer over here and it would take a fair few lurchers to take down some of the stags I've seen ! Quote Link to post

Would cross her with a good collie/bull/greyhound dog but I would be afraid the pups would throw too much to the greyhound Quote Link to post
Guest world.hunters
i prefer a collie cross for an allrounder i like a dog that will use its brain and is only hard mouthed when it needs to be. i would always pick a good collie cross over a good bull x but i have seen good and shite in all breedings of lurchers and thats just my own opinion. i know that alot of lads have bull x just for the fox but collie crosses can do just the same its just that if you buy a bull x its got a better chance of taking to that type of quarry where as the collie crosses need to be brought on more carefully sometimes but not all the time (if you know what im saying), i think that the bull x has become a fasion to alot of younger lads now and the just use it to look hard walking a big bully looking dog on the end of the lead. W.h agree with alot of what you said especially the statement about bull crosses becoming a fashion. I think the reason collie crosses are used less is that there are very few good first cross collie/greyhounds in the country, the demand for them has dwindled and so alot of good breeding has been lost. Have nothing against bull crosses ( had plenty myself) but I dont think they can be a true all rounder without something else in the breeding. Quote Link to post
mC HULL 12,611
why not put a half cross bedlington grey over her my mate has a 3'4 bred beddy grey and it is good on all quarry on the lamp Quote Link to post
