nearly lost 2 kits this weekend

Recommended Posts

Well I moved my kits and mum out into a run out side as I thought it would be better for them being bigger. All was going fine until Saturday. I checked on them all one was still asleep in his nest box but something told me all was not well. So I removed him from his box, he was all limp in my hand I gave him a nudge all he did was twitch. I put some cool water on him and gave him fluids and some food and he perked up within 20-30 minutes. And the same happened yesterday I have 3 big bottles of water which the kits use and a big bowl of water. I have also put the garden parasol up over them.

You were lucky you spotted the ferrets early enough to do something about it.When it is warm like it is now we have hoticultural netting we hang from the hutches which lets air circulate but stops suns strong rays getting through.

Yung ferrets can't regulate there body temperature like older ones and soon sucumbe to effects of heat. The best thing to do is put the hosepipe on any effected to fetch body temperature down quickly and force water into them.We use a shringe to do this, force the mouth open and get as much fluid into them as you can, then put them somewhere cooler.Keep repeating hosepipe and water until they are back to normal.Hope this helps.

heat strokes a killer simple as that if its not spotted soon enough, usual symptoms are panting like a dog listlessness & generally floppy , all you can do is remove the effected ferrets /s and gently cool them down in some water & make sure they drink, ferrets dont sweat & the heats litterly cooking there brains

People should be aware its heat stroke rather than sun stroke, so even in a shady area ferrets go down with it , even in the winter , i spoke to a chap years ago who took 4 ferrets out working in the winter & he put them in the boot off his car in a box, when he got to his destination they were all suffering heat stroke

Glad you spotted they were having problems in time :)

When it's really hot, apart from lots of water, shade, etc, I fill 2/3 litre plastic milk containers with water, freeze the water, then cover the bottles and pop them in the nest boxes.

The bottles stay cold for quite a few hours.

kay how long would it take for them to die

In all honesty i dont know but not hours & hours , preventions better than cure anyway , do what you can to make there homes as cool as possible, it helps if theres someone home in the day to check then every half hour or so

i used to use the frozen bottle method by have recently started using a cage fan ... only £8.00 from pets at home and well worth the money .........
