quick release weaver mounts

Recommended Posts

I've got a cabinet full of guns now :) However, with all the scopes they don't fit very well and it's a nightmare carefully positioning them all to get them in the cabinet.

I've removed the scope from my Howa (needs to be improved - I went to the Zeiss stand at the CLA and Richter Optik just don't cut it!!), and straight away it fits brilliantly. This got me thinking - Weaver mounts should in theory return a perfect zero every time because they return to the same point on the base every time, by virtue of the cross bar.

So, in theory, I can get quick release rings and weaver bases for all my rifles (dovetail to Weaver adapters for the rimfires) and remove all my scopes, meaning I can even get a 7th rifle in my cabinet (hooray - 308 here we come).

However, that's theory. Do these systems work in practice? Does anyone use these systems? Does the zero return properly? I know I could remove the Optilocks on my Sako and they would return to zero properly.

Can I get away with 20 quid Weaver's own mounts, or do I need to spend £60 on a set of Leupold rings?

Cheers muchly :)

I have Leupold rings on my .243, and they work. Very tight fit, no issue with them at all. Quick release 30mm rings on the Sauer were 28 Quid. Bases came on the rifle. I have a spare 25mm set of rings and looking for a target scope to zero on lighter ammo or home loads for paper tagets. The zero has remained the same when takong scope on and off..So will zero on chep ammo not fed prems for fun.

Depends on what you are shooting at. Personally I would rather spend the money on a second hand cabinet and leave all my scopes firmly attached and have the peace of mind that my zero will remain intact, it probably works out cheaper too!

True, the only reason i have gone this route, is i have one centre fire with several uses. I want to shoot several weights of ammo, without the usual hassle. 100gn for deer/fox,£1.40 a pop on federal premiums, or light ammo on privi or homeloads for range/paper punching £0.40/0.50 a shot

The right way for me is to get the new Swarovski calibrateable scope. But the wife needs a new hoover and hair curlers, so will just have to wait a bit LOL :clapper:
