Since my episode with the chicken killer ,which I managed to sort out with the 12g I had a chat with the farmer whose land backs on to mine ,as I originally sought permission in case I had to take charlie out in his field,as it happened I didn,t have to but never the less decided to take him a bottle of scotch just to say thanks ,Stayed for about an hour having a natter and the upshot is that he wants me to have a go at the foxes over his 800 acres great but i,m certainly not going to be killing great numbers with a 12 bore .Have read all the posts concerning what the best calibre is for fox ,and do not intend to open that debate up because have decided on the .223 . Application is almost complete

so the question is which .223 ,there is not really a restriction on the budget ,but obviously want to avoid being too silly, any ideas on the complete package would be very helpful and also ones to avoid if there are any, Many thanks P

 

ps am I pushing my luck asking for the .223 on first application ,I am on good terms with the feo and have held a sgc for many years ,also an idea on ammunition does buy 200 hold 300 sound excessive .

It sounds excessive to me, but a lot of forces half what you ask for anyway so if you ask for more than you need then fair enough.

For the record, i can have 150 but buy 100 .223 bullets.

It's perfectly fair and reasonable. I have 1200 hold, 1000 buy on my ticket for 223 so 300/200 is absolutely fine.

 

Trappa, you should look at getting that increased, 100 rounds is sod all and means you can't guarantee supply. I get through 100 in a day at Bisley, and since I shoot rabbits with the 223 as well, a fair old few in the field as well.

My feo told me that for c/f's the HO guidelines, for non target shooters is buy 200, keep 250 and for rim fire it's 500/750 but as with all things you can have more if you can show need.

i have buy 200 hold 250 in centrefire ammo. as for the 223 howa do a nice deal or if you want to spend abit more how about a nice remmington or tikka t3. you wont go wrong with them

Back to the original thread, i thought what he was asking was excessive, but maybe not after all. The best thing he can do is ask for a maximum number and let the old bill juggle the numbers.

Thanks guys I will go for 200/300 and see what happens, its not a huge amount ,and if they knock me back then so be it ,will be looking at the Tikka any ideas on a scope and mod chaps Many Thanks.

Mine on the .223 is the same as Mr L, actually it's true to say his is the same as mine now, long story, but he waved my FAC under there nose and said I want some like Deker please...and got it ...and why not....if you don't ask...

 

It is true to say that ours is fairly reasonable, there are others with more of course, but I can't help thinking your 100/150 is rather low, I'd have to buy a season ticket to my RFD with that few! But again, if it works for you then it's fine of course, we all have different requirements!

 

I would have thought 200/300 or 250/300 was reasonable to ask for...trouble is, every region has their view and every application is different..so who knows really!!

Personally, I have buy 300 hold 500 for my .222

 

As for a Mod and Scope.

 

An old favourite now is the T8 Reflex from Jackson rifles. But there are others out there such as the Predator8 and Wildcat8. All worth having a look at. They will probably be around £2-300 depending on where you shop.

 

A scope? As much as you want to spend on one.

 

If the budget really is no object then I will certainly recommend my personal scope, the Swarovski Z6i 2-12x50.

 

But that is a bit excessive money wise although the clarity I really cannot fault.

 

All the following are decent for a centrefire IMO and a x42-x50 Objective lens is fine, with as much Zoom as you care for, x12 is ample and more for most of the night time shooting distances, mine is almost exclusively set on x6, sometimes x8.

 

Something like a Leupold, Zeiss, Swarovski, MTC, Bushnell, Simmons. There are many many more which I'm sure someone will list, those are the ones I have looked through and shot through.

Moderators... well, ASE Jet-Z or the Atec range. Had a look at them at CLA, and they are much smaller and a bit lighter than a Predator8. Bit more money but worth it.

Come to think of it, I must have forgotten to look at anything other than Shotguns and Rifles as the CLA No thought of Mods or anything else really, was too entranced by the 4 Bore I was very tempted to buy

]Just having a look around for a couple of the scopes suggested a combined scope with range finder,useful bit of kit or gadget comes at a price tho will see if I can get a link up its a zeuss diascope i think
