If a dog marks a hole and you don't do anything about the mark, either no ferrets or terriers depending on what it is marking, then eventually the dog will stop marking because there is no reward for it marking. This is why I like to take pups out early, at a few months old, with a ferret, because then you can honour the mark and produce the rabbit. Then you praise the dog for marking, though the appearance of the rabbit will be praise and reward enough!

If one of my lurchers marks a bramble and the terrier has missed the mark or scent, I'll call the terrier back to go into the bramble where the lurcher has marked: usually results in flushing something! Unless the something has already gone, in which case I'll just call the dogs away and carry on. Sometimes young dogs will mark hot scent if the quarry has only recently gone from that spot. You learn to know your dog, and the dog also learns to tell the difference between hot scent and real quarry.

What are your views on the bull crosses nose and marking ability. My 9 month old bitch seems to be a natural. She rarely gets it wrong. Anyone else found this, Im quite new to the first hand experiance with the cross.
hi stormrider, im new to the bullx also, had collie types before, both were hancoxs breeding and both of them were very good at finding stuff in cover, and both were fairly obedient around sheep, but the bullx i have is better at finding and will go through any cover at all to get her prize, she has put up stuff and hunted it like a fox hound, if she comes across aline she gets her head down and she will work it, she will hedge like a terrier, if she stops along a hedge or what ever, i just wait and watch her go. from what ive seen she knocks spots off the collies ive had, down side is she is not 100% around sheep. my lad has a bullx and all though he do,nt work him much ive seen the dog hunt up and acount for a few.

They do seem to have a crackin nose. About 2 or 3 months back i came across some kids ferretin a massive ground burrie. so i went over with the pup she was only about 5 or 6 months old. She started diggin at a small bolt hole, so i asked one of the kids to stick a ferret in and around 6 fist size kits came out. I was well chuffed, all she had ever seen was a rabbit skin.

My young half cross is getting quite trustworthy with his nose now, and im starting to learn what he is marking by his behaviour. He will act differently with different quarry, which, i suppose is very handy. Another thing with mine is his tracking ability, as I hunt with spaniels and crosses, and if one goes off in the other direction giving tounge, I can slip him away to catch up with the hound, where he will take over and persue the rabbit, and sometimes make the catch.
