fergie 0
I have been looking at buying day old chicks to feed along with rabbit ect as I’m running low on rabbit. Due to having 15 ferrets to feed 4 adults and 11 babies. But then I got to thinking how much goodness can there be in a day old chicks, as the chick it's self has not had time to develop any proper bones or meat. So its just an egg with fluff, Well I went to the Kent show and my Mrs (Lou) said why don't you ask in the chicken breeders tent, I replied your asking the wrong people thinking there all green peace hippies that live and let live. How WRONG I was Lou comes back and says you need to speak to him (the owner of most the birds) after a quick chat it turns out he grows his cockerels to around 2-3 weeks and then culls them. I ask what he dose with them, he drives them to a zoo. I asked if there is any chance of buying any. He gives me his email and we leave it at that. When I get home I email him and the replies is, come round and collect some so I tip up and talk about fresh there still clucking in a pen. He says I take it you want them dead. Yes please I don’t want 10 birds in the car putting feathers every where >His next question was, are you squeamish I just had a little giggle to myself No mate I reply. after we cull them he says I have some hens a mate dropped off but they where in a bad way so I knock on the head are they any good yes my ferrets don't mind what sex they are. I ask how much for the lot nothing he says and if you email me around once a week or every two weeks you can have some more. These are not big rooster s they are small bantam size, perfect. will.f11 24
this year my dad has been doing loads of chicken breeding. (light sussex) but the cockrels all get sexed out at a few weeks old and are a very good meal for the ferrets. they practically live on it and we have a few big sheds full of these birds!
