i am gong out...

Recommended Posts

well i have been invited to go and do a spot of ferreting in some alotments during this week coming, i am taking my rifle, but i think the best method will be with the ferrets, now i have never seen these alotments and dont know what sort of ground it is or anything.

i jus want some basic advice what i need and should take.

i have got 16 nylon nets but dont think i will be enough, so will have to see if i can afford to buy some before then.... unless someone is offering me some :D

i dont have pegs, i dont know if you put the peg at the top or at the bottom of the hole.

i am worried even though i have now got a locator, i am still worried about losing a ferret or ferret and collar.

i havnt got one of those folding spades i got a normal garden spade..

please just any advice i would be really greatful.

i have never been before and the guy i am going with hasnt being since he was a kid so he is abit rusty aswell..

i am really looking forward to it though..

many thanks

the peg goes at the top of the hole and then lay the net over the hole with the bottom ring tucked underneath get some hazel and make some pegs out of that u mite need to buy some more nets depends how big the warrens are and a garden spade will be fine better than one of them syupid little folding things

You prob have enough nets for your 1st time out mate. You can wait till you got a spare bit of cash.Sometimes i dont lift enough nets all you do is block off some of the bolt holes with rocks or sods.I cant advise you on locators as i have just recentl bought one.All the best and i hope you have a good time matey.

thanks.

i am taking my big hob poley, i am taking him because he is bigger and slower i am hoping he will be to slow to catch any rabbits under ground and they will bolt before he gets hold of them.

i am taking 1 albino jill, i do have another 2 but they both had phantom pregnancys and have no lost all the weight.

2 silver hobs, both been castrated - not to keen on these though to be honest, long and thin. so not sure.

i have only got 3 collars so they will have to take it in turns going out because i wont use them unless they have got a collar on.

should i leave a silver and take another albino jill..

also the polecat hob an the other 3 have never met, will this be a problem. if they meet underground.

how long do i wait before i get the locator out.

how do i know if they have killed down or are still working.

whats the best way to kill the rabbit by the pull and twist or a hit with the back of your hand to its neck.

sorry for stuped questions i just want it to be good and verything to go to plan :D

thanks

your batter off taking the small ones so that they wont kill under ground have u figured out how to use the collar yet and just use the pull and twist method and make sure u net all the holes or block them in and just wait about 10 minutes allso and if nothing get the locator rory

I personally prefer the smaller ferret for working but thats my personal opinion, I also prefer to use one ferret at a time in the ground, a good experienced ferret shouldn't have a problem shifting the rabbits. If you just was over the bury with the ocater you should be able to tell if the ferret is on the move or not.

I hope this is a bit of help to you i know its not a lot,

I got a question for you, you say you have castrated hobs, How hold have they got to be before you can get them castrated, I kept a hob back out of my litter this year to have him done.

Where in south wales are you im in blackwood.

Id give the rabbit a crack to the back of the neck with an open hand.Like a karate chop.As for how long do you wait i have waited 20mins to half hour while my ferts worked a burrow.Dont be to quick to get a locator out and a spade jazz. Its not always possible to know if they have killed sometimes you might hear the rabbit squealing. In all probability if you do have to dig the bunny will be in a stop with your fert scratching its arse.Oh and yes it will be ok if they meet underground. In fact probally make the job easier if they are lying up.

sorry mate i cant help you about the castrated hobs, i bought them like that but i think they have to have there first season and then they are ok..

im in newport and ferreting in cardiff..

thanks for all the help everyone.

i dont now what size th warrens are or anything like that, so if they are 5-6 hole warrens then 1 ferret will be fine but if they are like 10-15 hole warrens wouldnt it be a bit much for 1 ferret... i dont have a clue see its all new to me i have had ferrets for a while but not been ferreting, im also taking my 177 bsa lightning, so will give thatago if i see a few i will tryand sneek up on them.

thanks for that scothunter. is it a case of trial and error. we are going in the afternoon i think, i know most of the warrens are coverd by brambles and nettles so he is going in the day to cut them down and shift them out the way and then i will go and we will start ferreting.

Good luck then butty, You will learn it all with experience and find it very enjoyable.

good luck jazz, your right about using more than one fert at a time, they should be ok, but if any of the hobs your taking are still sexually willing and able, they will try it on underground with the jills, so use jills first, if nothings bolting, remove the jills and try putting a hob down, as its your first time out, you dont want too many underground at the same time, if your see'ing the ferret come up and go down holes, then leave the locator in ya bag, its only really when you havent seen a fert for 20 minutes or so that you want to start using it, keep quite while waiting, as too much niose will stop rabbits from bolting, plus you get to hear "thunder" as the rabbits give the warning signal of drumming their rear feet on the floor, if on using the locator, your getting signals (knocking) all over the place, it means the ferret is still moving underground, in which case, no need to use it

if I were you, Id leave the rifle at home, if all goes well, you'll be far to busy to use it,

i find my small ferrets nearly always kill underground as they get over the tops of the rabbits and finish them off the big hobs i use tend to work slower and push more rabbits out ,look at the area you are working and use the ferret you think will do the job best , if its allotment there may be holes under sheds and stuff that you cant dig to . dont take the gun i doubt you will be able to use on council allotments any way . ive got a ferreting book somewhere here that i dont read anymore and even though your a dragons supporter when i find it i will post it to you pm me your address , will look for it tomorrow

silent hunter i dont want to critise but if you put the lower rings slightly down the holes the rabbit is standing on the net before it starts to purse then theres less chance of it slipping the net , thats just the way i do it .
