Artificial Insemination

How does one go about having 'frozen' Dog semen transported and stored, please? I'm talking transglobaly here too. And I'm completely serious in my intent too.

Sorry about the facetious title then. I didn't see much point in putting it under Lurkers. Terriers didn't sound that much better. But I do figure one or two of you rather more dedicated Bull 'n Terrier lads may have come across this idea before. I stuck that title on just to catch as many eyes as possible in this absolute backwood of a Board.

Craic is then; I want to import some Dog cum, from America. Why? You just check out trying to get a whole f*cking Dog out of US and into Eire and ye'll quickly see what a crafty little 'Shitter I am. (Well, Alright; It's my man in America who's the genius. I pointed out to him how it - practically - couldn't be done, to get me a pup over. He came back with the brilliant suggestion of sending me a phial of crack off. I think he's a genius for coming up with that one).

Now I just want to get the basics straight in my head. " Frozen ", in this case, means inside a flask of liquid nitrogen, so Dean O' was telling me tonight. Ok. I know for a fact these flasks can be bought. I can't see any great problem with a jet carrying one.

What do I do with it when I get it? Pop it on the shelf and wait for my bitch to throw a season? I have the unspeakable thing I'll have to do next all mapped out in my head. No! I Will Not discuss it or show photo's! That'll be between her and I  Come to think of it; I'm not sure which of us has the biggest job to contend with: Me or the guy with the Dog! :icon_eek:

Anyway, this is all dead serious shit. Anyone actually had any experience of any of this? Even if ye used white coats and laboratories from start to finish, ye may have gleaned Something that'll help me get my head round the middle bit. What do the flasks cost? Will a standard flight carry one? Anything special about how ye need to store the actual flask? Anything I'm missing here?

Thanks ~ for any serious answers or PM's ;)

:notworthy:Thankyou, Stabbist!

I've actually been off on a tour of Google, since making my initial, rather spontanious, Post. I already saw that it's a lot more than a spot of borderline bestiality at both ends. The cost and sheer size / complexity of the 'Flasks' also made my eyes bulge!

Granted; It Was mostly dealing with Commercial concerns, race horses and prize bull stuff. But, shit; It's really rather pissed on my own, initial, notions of having a pint sized flask of Dogs Delight flown over here and my just cracking out the crack off on the ninth day

Still probably cheaper though than trying to impost a ready made Dog. And, anyway ~ without publicising my private and personal reasoning ~ the Dog I'm after simply wouldn't suite the procedure Brussels decrees.

Anyway; Having just shot down that page like a bad curry, I picked up enough to feel it was worth Book Marking. I'll take a better look later ;)

Expect a brief PM.

Scent; The bitch in question would be the same breed as the guy's breeding his Dog to, and from which he offered me a pup. Perfectly compatible. It's just a red tape and buying fast cars for middle men issue ~ as per f*cking usual

;) He's the first person I thought of, mate ~ obviously. But I thought I'd leave him to his peace till I at least had the basics kicked out.

I've already explained my situation to him. I need a very particular trait in this Dog. Trouble is, I'm presently stuck between a rock and a hard place. I Need something specialised. Only I can't take it 'till'. All I'm showing here is signs of my industry towards that time. 'Planning and preparation are Everything'.

I'm about to go off - alough my name may stay showing as in here? Not sure. If ye know that Dog and that man, as ye obviously do, my PM's always there and I'm open to further input

Just had 5 mins to read the whole thread.......if and when you do venture into the world of importing semen you will not have to touch it ! for want of a better expression .....all that will go through your hands directly is money and paperwork......whoever and wherever the dog is that you wish to use will obviously need to be in the hands of a similar outfit to the one i posted above ( uk clone ) in that particular country.....theres clone places scattered all round the world so shouldnt be difficult, america has i believe 6 or 7 in different states......theres no point getting the vet to shake one out and bottle it .....its all far more complicated than that......chilled semen will be no good if its coming from the US...even when stored correctly it needs to be used within 72 hours and you will be very lucky to have it door to door so to speak in this time......hence frozen is the only option....the quality of the semen will be tested before its actually used.....the working mans word for a " shot " of juice is a straw and this is how it will be sold and collected....ie....you will buy it by the straw....and straws go into the flask of liquid nitrogen held at around minus 190 degrees if i remember right.....collection and storage is of course the main importance to quality useable sperm....and this is not something that will involve you anyway....so best left to the experts......if i am not wrong uk clone has the only storage facility in the uk....although ive not used them for a while so possibly theres others now.....

The biggest issue you will have is paperwork as opposed to the complicated scientific stuff....like i say, that doesnt involve you anyway but the paperwork does and thats just as complicated....although uk clone can and will help you as regards pet passport or whatever....incidentally,uk clone have i believe a 90 % success rate, which is very good considering there frozen semen is inseminated via the fanny as opposed to surgically !

Hope this has been of some use and good luck.

there is also a facility on merseyside and one in leeds gnasher,,,its more expensive than buying the bloody dog though and still takes the same amount of time as normal quarantine due to importation/exportation laws,,,,,,the facility in leeds charges £300 or so for collection and £50 a year for storage and tend to use 4 straws per breeding,,i would advise at least a dozen straws collected just to be on the safe side,,,ai procedures are prone to infection and lower birth rate whatever the experts tell you....

as gnasher said it is a simple procedure but time consuming to get the semen over here,,,good luck...

:hmm: Something I think I'd better add to all this is that I Really Am in Co. Leitrim, Eire! (I'm not showing the Irish flag just so's I can slap up " Pre Ban " photo's, for chrissake).

So, I'd probably have to use an Irish facility. Work through IRISH channels and so forth. This is a 'Foreign Country', remember. What goes on under english law doesn't bother us a bit , over here. And one or two of ye will, by now, understand the implications of that statement.

Anyway; Gist of it seems to be that it's outrageously expensive. It's a nightmare of red tape. But it Can be done. Cool. Thank you.

So it's possible. Only, importing the Dog I need, from USA, is just about Impossible - nothing much to do with laws or even the stratospheric costs involved. Just the nature of the Dog. So I'll have to try to find a way of breeding my own. Then I'll die. And that'll be that.

Isn't life a f*cker?

Cheers, people :good:

You asked for info....and thats what you got......to be honest i didnt bother to look where you live but as far as im aware theres no storage facilities in ireland full stop.....but if you got your bitch to england and took her back full of pups....now thats not as difficult as sending her to america or any of the other alternatives......

Castro.....i dont know about those prices,if there correct then they have certainly come down a bit in the last few years......collection alone was 500 dollars !.....add to that storage during air freight....storage once here which used to be around 25 pound per month is surrey......then you have the relevant lab tests for the bitch and the insemination itself and tests thereafter.........and you wont get much change out of 2 grand our money....and this was a few years back....maybe the price has come down a tad now i dont know.......

The beauty to all this is of course......a dozen straws is the norm.....your bitch may only need 1 or 2....leaving you with another 10/11 in storage !.....if you have 2 or 3 bitches then over the course of a few years that 2 grand is not that higher money......plus how else would you be able to have pups from some of the better stud dogs worldwide.....its a complicated buiseness, and needs a lot of planning and a good bit of help.....but if it go,s well.....it go,s really well.

devoidoftalent....i think you,ll find mate that surgical insemination is the least favoured method and is only used in cases where either lack of skills,or lack of equipment is the case, fibre optic jargon.....frozen,as opposed to chilled or fresh semen has the lowest conception rate due to a shorter life span in the uterus....mature ovum and all that carry on !....but still has around a 90 % success rate.

all this of course though is subject to the fertility of the bitch.
