Gimli 0
So there I was, crouched in cover waiting for the grouse. It was early in the morning, just light and bloody cold. The date 13th July, the quarry - grouse. Oh oh - you can see the SGC going down the pan if I'm caught. But don't be distressed, it was all perfectly legal. I'm just back from a great 2 week safari in Namibia but topped it off with a morning sandgrouse shooting on a farm about 150km from the capital. Great morning's shooting despite the loan of an incredibly old Belgian side-by-side which nearly took my shoulder off and left me with bruised fingers. Sandgrouse are about the size of a young woodpigeon but beautifully marked with russets, browns and fawn feathers. They fly fast like pigeons but when they come in to drink at waterholes they lose all caution. After mastering the mule of a gun, I knocked down a dozen sandgrouse before my small stock of cartridges was exhausted. It was great sport though and even better to be doing it on an arid, semi-desert farm where hunting income is vital to help farmers in marginal land. Here are some of the photos: I arranged it all through the hunting lodge I stayed at near Windhoek - Heja Game Lodge ( http://www.hejalodge.com/hunting.htm ) which has nice chalets , fantastic food (try the Springbok Milagnese with pasta or the rare oryx steak) and will organise bird shooting or big-game hunting at pretty good prices. And they're a very nice bunch of people! Edited July 17, 2008 by Gimli Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Sounds like a nice bit of sporting shooting in a cracking location. Would like to try some of those dishes myself, sounds tasty! Quote Link to post
Gimli 0
The oryx served rare was fantastic - as were the SA red wines and Namibian-German beer! Would recommend a trip to Heja. Edited July 17, 2008 by Gimli Quote Link to post

The one in the avatar, I photographed in Botswana two years ago. It had killed a porcupine but was suffering the consequences as it had a load of quills stuck in it. Quote Link to post
