THE STIFFMEISTER 16,350
Why not join as a junior entry..Do a years basic training on army wages better than civvie street pal, Then attach to engineers, learn a trade from them then volunteer for P company with 9 para squadron RE who are the only squadron left from Market Garden and were still in existance when the Para reg were disbanded after WW2 ... In the airborne engineers you get trade pay, Jumps pay and if your switched on enough , combat divers pay which starts off at around £4000 extra per annum Or you could join reg, Get treated like a c**t, paid accordingly, stag on and sign off after 4 years.... But Then again, wearing maroon isnt about the money, Its the pride.. Dont build up, stay lean and run like the wind..And man up..Basically if you let things like twisted ankles, Bleeding hands , skin hanging off your feet bottoms and being sick in your mouth twice a day bother you, then the airborne isnt for you.. Green on, Go I love how people sell their own corps above other ones!! LOL, if you are 16 mate and want to join now, pm me i am an instructor at harrogate (where you would go) and i can answer any question you have. Being in the army is about the only job that has a bit of security at the minute, all the trades are on there knees, even the poles are f*****g off as there is no work for them

P.Carter 0
I was thinking about joining up at one stage mate, but I let my fitness slip and I still have unspent convictions to account for, I don't think I'd pass with my Medical either as I've got a history of quite bad eczema, but I do know someone that just said it was a touch of dry skin with his and he joined at 17 and is now 20 odd, and he's still there, but the minimum age that you can join is set quite high so it's always an option considering for the future with me. Just think about what your doing properly, it's a big step to be taking at 16 years of age IMO and don't forget you have to sign up for a minimum of 4 years service with them (correct me if I'm wrong about this). Just run regularly, and obviously keep timing yourself every so often over 1.5 miles and see if you can keep your run times below the minimum allowed to pass selection, 9 minutes 18 seconds if I remember rightly for the Paras. Another good thing to do, is things like sprint 100 meters then stop and do so many press-ups, and carry on like that for a bit. There's loads of things you can do to improve your fitness and upper body strength, but obviously the fitter you are going into selection, the easier it is going to be for you to pass it. Another thing that you will probably be aware of, is that during the run you do in selection, *UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES* walk any of it, or stop. It's only 1.5 miles, so you should be alright, but they would rather see people making the distance spewing their guts up with a shit time, than people who stop and walk for a bit with a good time. Because it shows dedication. This is the sort of advice I was given when I was in the application stage mate, so hopefully it will be helpful, best of luck with it all. Oh, and be prepared to get your balls felt at the medical. Cheers, Paul. Edited August 30, 2008 by P.Carter
