Redman 0
Would anybody care top give an opinion and vote on two airgun stories I read/heard about this week. I find both stories extremes to what I would ever imagine myself being able to produce. I read the `10mm at 50yds` on an airgun forum and the `head shot at 80yds` off a friend in work. 1st story. A guy wrote he’d achieved 10mm groupings on a paper target in wind and heavy rain with an unmodified hw80 in .177. 2nd story. A friend in work told me he has a friend who knows a friend that can consistently get rabbits at 80yds with headshots with a legal limit PCP .177, he added this fella once shot 5 rabbits at this distance before the rest got spooked, and its not a case of if he’ll get the rabbit at 80yds .. rather – how many he’ll get at 80yds. Both stories I personally find – quite unbelievable to say the least, though if I was to believe any it would be the 1st story .. just! The 2nd story for me is just too far fetched .. even if you could get lucky and hit the rabbits head at 80yds would a .177 still hold enough clout to kill the rabbit? .. and to do it consistent?? To add insult to injury.. the friend of my friend - when hearing about the `10mm at 50yds` added the guy who wrote it must be a complete liar or a novice air gunner who doesn’t know what airguns are capable off .. lol Your opinions are very much appreciated. SEAN3513 7
first one is possible........if using a rest of some kind!! seccond one complete and utter bollocks!!! .177 pellet at yds would approx be hitting at about 1.5 - 2 ft/lbs. no where near enough power to kill a rabbit. plus he would have to be aiming about 2 feet above the kill zone.........because he won't have his zero set at at yds. i think your mate has confused feet and yards.............. feet.....no problem!!! cheers sean Quote Link to post

Redman 0
Thanks both. I too asked was he confusing yards with feet .. and got a definite no - def yards! I guess some airgunners tell the same tales fishermen are infamous for. What size targets and ranges are the top FT shooters getting? Quote Link to post
Rentomski 0
2nd story.A friend in work told me he has a friend who knows a friend that can consistently get rabbits at 80yds with headshots with a legal limit PCP .177, he added this fella once shot 5 rabbits at this distance before the rest got spooked, and its not a case of if he’ll get the rabbit at 80yds .. rather – how many he’ll get at 80yds. Some years ago I headshot and killed a buck rabbit at what turned out to be 76 long paces away with a .177 HW90K. I thought it was a lot closer than it actually was; the first shot hit the track some 2/3 of the way to the rabbit. "Scope has taken a knock" thought I and held over for the second shot and killed the rabbit. In my defence, I should point out that the way the fence line ran down the side of the track gave the optical illusion of considerable foreshortening, i.e making the apparent range much shorter than the actual range, and it was a very big buck rabbit well over four pounds in weight; both factors conspiring to make the rabbit appear much closer than it actually was. It was an immediate kill so the pellet energy must have been sufficient to do the job. Would I attempt such a shot again with the same air rifle? NEVER!!! It is certainly not something that could be done consistently with 12ftlb air rifle and I'd rather let my hawk deal with the rabbits now anyway! Quote Link to post

woodchip 2
a couple of months back i went to the hampshire county show and i went on the weirauch air gun shoot and i was speaking to one of the instructors she said they shoot targets at up to 100yrd with a legal limit air rifle ???? ive shot a bunnie at 68m myself with my .177 s410 i know this was an accurate range as i use a range finder my gun is zerod in at 50m and 2nd mildot down is 70m there has to be no wind but i know i can kill at this range as i tested the guns capability when i got it . ChrisJones 7,975
Like with all these stories... I'll believe it when I see it. The bits in the middle are all about credibility. As always I'd like to see the evidence, and a rabbit dying of lead poisoning doesn't count! Quote Link to post
