RESCUE GREYHOUND

Recommended Posts

A workmate of mine popped around today for some advice but i couldn't help him on this one.He took a rescue greyhound on as a pet a few months back, the problem is the dog gets frightened when it rains, its okay when its out in the rain but when the dogs in the house and heavy rain/hail makes that noise on the windows/doors that we all know too well the dog turns into a nervous shivering wreck and curls up behind the corner couch. The only thing i can compare it to is some dogs react like this with fireworks.Any thoughts on how a dog might have developed this fear of noise and what can be done to cure this fear will be passed on. thanks longslip.

i raised a doberman mix from a seven week old pup, great dog, bold as anything .. but one day he was shot for trespassing in a cow pasture.... wasnt a bad wound. just some buckshot in the thigh.... but since that day he was terrified of loud noises and thunder. if he outside when a storm rolled in he would literally break into the house.... he broke a window and chewed through some french doors. actually chewed clean through the wood so he could get his nose through.. werent we shocked to come home and find that!

if he was inside he would hide under the bed....

one thing not to do is coddle the dog or pet him to comfort him during one of those episodes. it encourages them to keep doing it. just leave the dog alone, go about normal business. if the dog is destructive then maybe they should get him a crate and keep it in a quiet room, maybe with a blanket over it until the storm passes.

Good advice there. You could also try and desensitise the dog with cd's in the car when traveling for exercise (a pleasurable experience). Failing that there are plenty of herbal calming aids on the market.......

could be any number of things mate from poor socialisation to being left out in a downpour....I was given an English Setter many years ago that was absolutely terrified of people. It used to crawl under chairs and any furniture it could find to escape. It took a few weeks but eventually she came round and after being socialised properly became a very outgoing dog...just takes time and patience...hope it works out for him :icon_eek:

when i took my greyhound in it used to be very sensative .esspeically around bangs gates opening gowing threw gates etc over a few months it setteled down an awfull lot.

i put that down to being shooved in the traps .maybe wrong .id put yours down to being in metal kenneling and the nights spent listnening to the rain beating down on the roof .and the curling up trying to hide as a defence mecanism.im sure in time if the dogs indoors and well socailised it will snap out of it and come good .mine did and wish you all the best with it

Get your friend to try rescue remedy to calm the dog. As already said, don't fuss the dog during a storm or whatever the trigger is but do suggest a tshirt or similar that smells of the owner/whoever the dog has the best bond with. A loudish radio may help and some people may suggest a DAP diffuser although I found it didn't work on a terrier, a larger and calmer breed may benefit more though.
