Guest davieboy
if you are already using him to catch rabbits lurcher style you will have a job on your hands as whenever a rabbit bolts, if he sees it he will take after it, so you may have to teach sit to flush so she will need to be steady around game which depending on how long he has been chasing them will be a problem do you have access to a rabbit pen? kx100 66
he has been chasen for bout 2 years and i ha no acess to a rabbit pen Quote Link to post
Guest davieboy
what about a lure?? but anyway before you move on to it, the stop whistle will need to be on the ball, have you introduced that yet?? oh and he is not to old to train, what level exactly is he at, maybe if you tell more about the background you might get more constructive advice Quote Link to post
druimmuir 1
Lets be honest after spending 2 years being allowed and encouraged to chase do you really think it's fair to try and re-train the dog now to be steady to flush and to retrieve on command .......Personally I would accept the damage has been done, as it's going to take a huge effort and a lot of time to steady him now. Guest davieboy
i agree it will be difficult and am well aware you are an expert in training spaniels but if it is his only dog and just wants him for some rough shooting or a fieldsports companion, he is never going to want trial standard but i see no reason why the dog cant be retrained as he will not be expecting to produce a ftch i dont think accepting the damage is done answers his original question all the best with mate as nic says it will be tough Quote Link to post
The one 8,522
Need to go back to basic's and start from the beginning and see if you can get him to sit when he flushes and take it from there Quote Link to post

Easier to preserve a saint than reform a sinner, he's also already killed hens so would you want this dog retrieving game for the pot ? as he's more than likely hard mouthed too. Sorry for being too honest but I am just telling it like it is Nicola Quote Link to post
Guest davieboy
fair enough nic brutal honesty is always respected Quote Link to post

Guest davieboy
ok mate i am not an expert but i have had a similar problem myself, just use your dog for rough shooting yourself on the corvids and bunnies, maybe next year he will be ready for the big organised shoots but i would say for now he would probably do more harm than good, first thing you need to to do is let the dog know it is not a lurcher and should not chase rabbits, i dont have a rabbit pen either but i do a bit of trapping and snaring so i would catch a few live, i would stick my dog on a long live and and stand in the dog run (mine is mesh) and let the two rabbits in, if the dog goes for them you check him, wont take long before the dog just ignores them, a bit like getting a dog used to a ferret. In the mean time you should be doing a lot of lead and heel work, introduce the stop whistle and dont let the dog have any free hunting. i would not do any retrieving for a while either Again i am not an expert but this is what i would do, if you want more info on anything i have said pm me, or go to www.gundogworld.co.uk and ask what the members on there would do as they have a lot of experience on the site hope that helps mate Quote Link to post

But i think you will find that Druimmuir is also a moderator on that site Quote Link to post
eshielsgundogs 0
I don't think you will be fully able to trust your springer not to chase. probably best kept as a pet and start again. Ian Quote Link to post
