Out of season lamping

Recommended Posts

Until I came on this site I never realised how many people not only lamp it seems all spring and summer but also are not in anyway ashamed of it or make any attempt to keep it quiet. To me its a matter of playing fair and letting the quarry rear there young and live the good life until battle commences once again in the autumn.I suppose some of them are fare weather men.The real winter just to much them. What possible good can come from killing during the breeding season?

rabbit and fox are vermin so i agree with killing them whenever, hares if are sparce in a place them i would let them breed but if the place is bad and theyve become a pest then they need controlled the thing i dont aggre on is people running lurchers on female roe deer at this time of year as the roe kid is left to starve if in a large wooded plantation and is licensed to with a rifle then again its become a pest and normally (in my experience shooting deer and working with stalkers) they will shoot the roe kid (s) at the same time so nothings left to starve i definetly do not agree on people running dogs on female deer in the summer.

I love my sport, and as a field sportsman, I like to give my quarry a good breeding season, free from disturbance so that I can take a manageable harvest through the season.

But then I am also a proffesional pest controller, and often have to kil great numbers through their breeding season, usually though, this is when the population has become so great that crops or gardens are being decimated.

Its one of those things, if I have to do it, then I do it. It is distastefull, but often very necessary.

We have a very busy Dairy farm in south Devon, our farm is over run with rabbits and the occasional van load of dumped foxes that i wont go into but most people on here know im getting that dealt with.

Rabbits eat the grass that is meant for our cows, less grass means we have to feed our cattle bought in feed then it forces up our bills and so on.

I dont care what time of the year it is the rabbit population has to be kept under control !!! also rabbits dig and cause damage that can cause accidents with cattle falling into holes, a dairy cow is worth between £1000 to £2000 at the moment so we wont tolerate damage from Rabbits.

landowners = PERMISSION = keeping landowners happy , = more than likely MORE permission ,

if your landowner wants you to graft , you should oblige , after all , that is why your there , your not exactly going to say * sorry mate its out of season* , he will and guaranteed WILL , find somebody else to do it , and wont have any problems in doing so , permissions a privlidge , not a right . its in your best intrests to keep the landowner happy .

if that means nocking a few pregnant bunnies then so be it :victory: , may not be moraly right , but its right thing to do if you want to keep permission.

Im sorry but you sound like a peasant from the dark ages doing the landowners bidding.Ive had plenty of farmers ask me to go in the summer but i just say i only go seriously in winter. If they dont like it thats upto them.Theres plenty more fields in England, but people mostly use that as an excuse anyway i think.Just how far would you go to keep farmers happy anyway? Farmers are not the easiest people to please anyway so why not plough your own furrow(no pun intended)and let him get on with it.

Im not really talking about business here or people who make there living from vermin killing Im talking about people who do it for sport and pastime.

You sound like a rifle man to me and riflemen are the biggest vermin in the countryside.

rabbits are a very serious pest in parts of britain.if they werent controlled all year round they would be an even bigger problem.there wouldnt be any grass left for sheep.ive been shooting a few this week where whole hay fields have been stripped.

anyway given a choice theres no-way i would stop rabbiting in february and start again in september.it would be too long without working the dogs.i dont lamp dogs in the breeding season due to lambs and gamebirds but i would if i could.my dogs kill rabbits out bushing all year long, not large amounts but if you kill one or a hundred pregnant does its the same debate.

do all adult rabbits get a chance?i dont think they do,alot of rabbits ill catch this winter wont know what the feck is happening untill they are caught and killed.thats just the way it is,not every rabbit is aware of what you and your dog are upto and many wont have a chance of escaping.do/can all rabbits give good sport????

for me there is no argument, rabbits are a pest just like rats.most of us would kill baby and pregnant rats so whats the difference with rabbits?

there are so many rabbits about that wiping out the area of bunnies isnt even an issue.it would be different if you live in a place with very few rabbits though............then id say leave them be.

if keepers/farmers are allowing you to work dogs over their land you dont refuse to do summer pest control when asked.well i wouldnt anyway.

I do wonder if these people who are moaning about keeping rabbits under control all year round actually drink milk, eat meat etc its harder enough at the moment trying to earn a living from farming in this country as it it, with out hundreds/thousands of rabbits eating away at your profits/buisness.

Sorry to moan about this but our farm is our livelyhood, we are not benefit scroungers just honest hard working people try to earn a decent living.

Well said pointer !!! our farm is in south devon near kingsbridge and compared to the cold winters of the 60's70's and 80's it is very mild/warm here all year around so the rabbit population has just exploded out of control.

We also have alot of do gooders/city people buying up the land around here and there the main culprits for letting the rabbits get out of control.

Does anyone know what the rabbit to cow/sheep ratio is when estimating the loss of grass is, the countrymans did an article on it a few years ago and it was shocking.
