Guest bunny_basher
My headkeeper asked me to shoot rats, around all the wheat sylos, and the barns where we do all the bagging up of wheat, and i have had a few good nights but usually a F*****G dissapointing night, I have tryed everything....red light, white light, sitting and staying in a certain place for hours. i tryed just sitting in te motor with the air gun on the wingmirror and just driving around all the different areas which is how i have had the most success, but considering how many rats there are, and there are litterally huindreds, im still not getting the success i would hope to.................any ideas?!? midnight 657
have you tryed .410's and ferrets mate . ? also we have had "better nights" when its shitting it down with rain , as you say just cruising round slowly picking them off with rifles. all the best matt Quote Link to post
Guest bunny_basher
im not a keeper there i just do a bit of work for him, but yer we have trap EVERYWHERE and i mean EVERWHERE, and poison, but they will never stop all of them, and if i can go out and shoot 20 a night a few times a week then that should cut the population down big time. Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Pre bait a few areas with corn and then wait by them.We used to do a pigsty years ago and by laying out a run of corn down the passage ,on the way home from work,we used to sneak up to the door with the 12 bore and let them have 2 barrels of 9shot. Pigs soon got used to the noise. Most killed with 2 shots was 42 if I remember right. Quote Link to post
Guest bunny_basher
42 with two shots.....thats rediculous. yer the trouble is where they are is all around the grain sylos so they have no shortage of grub. but i may try putting some around the ditches where all the wholes are. thanks Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,543
An expensive but effective route is night vision. My mate has it and we have had some good nights with it and it would work better with a good bait. Quote Link to post

rob reynolds uk 3
iv done a lot of rat shooting in my day rats dont like high powed lamps in there faces well who does  put a dimmer on your lamp turn it down so you can just make them out 20ft away then bait up the ground best is on one of the mostly used runs or round were they are seen the most or were the most holes are they will find it ,bait about 7 places or more well apart from each other and walk round slowly with the lamp off then turn it on then up slowly so you can just make them out to shoot ,its better if you have some low powered scopes like the simmons 1.5x5x20 very good for ratting...make sure you scopes are set for the close range Quote Link to post
