ferreterni 29
I have taken an interest of late in the american bulldog, will probably never keep one, to many other dgs at the minute and always will be, Was thinking about some of the more bully lurchers, do they have a strong gaurding tendancy as well as the ability to hunt rabbits on lamp and with ferrets. I have a bull wheaten greyhound, but she isnt bully looking at all. Works well but doesn't have that look. I am interested in something with a strong gaurding ability and family pet as I have a young family, and think in this day and age it doesnt hurt to have a bit of security. I have a terrier spaniel cross that is a great gaurd, is on full alert if someone strange comes in the gate, and will not take to strangers at all, even on the lead. But not really again a full gaurd dog, although she has a cast iron jaw. I am not interested in a dog for fighting, or as a status symbol etc, just wondering if the bully looking dogs can gaurd and work well enough to watch the family as well as feed them. The neighbour has a bull mastiff in the yard and postman delivers their's to my door, intersted in something that has that effect on people, with a hunting ability. any opinions appreciated. thanks. Guest smashygadge
i think most dogs have an instict to gaurd at night when home its in a dogs nature to protect.and the i bet the lurcher you have could hold its own too Quote Link to post
pocket rocket 2
i seen a pitt bull x greatdane few weeks back now if ya want something to scare people thats your dog dont know how it would fair in the field though Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,714
to be honest the only running dogs i seen with a tendency to guard/protect owners were old type collie lurchers bred using decent farm stock collies.my gsd x grey is no guard dog,she will occasionally bark when someone goes past but not always.infact the wifes staff which is about 8 months old is a better watchdog.thats why i have guard dogs/watch dogs as well.which means i cant have more than one lurcher.we have a free roaming rotty and a gsd kenneled and exercised with the lurcher.funnily enough whilst talking to a neighbour the other month in a small village not on roadmaps we have within a stones throw two reformed addicts about 5 on methadone? and couple of users plus various other dodgy residents.so it pays to have something around to keep an eye on the kids garden toys, and the house. ive seen a few mastiff x greatdanes that were good solid guards, one was 13 stone.but wouldnt be any good in the field.
