borderman45 0
I love jrt's and they love their work, a very game dog but knowing a few over the years I would be very wary of them with very small children as they can be a bit spikey ! It,s absolutely true that it is rarely the dogs fault but they are a little less tolerant than some terriers. Having said all that a good dog man or good family man would never leave a 1 year old with any dog unattended. Colin. Quote Link to post

First of all ANY breed of dog will snap and bite when a child pulls their tail/ears or sticks their finger in their eyes. Not the dogs or childs fault, don't let it happen. If you want a dog to put out game for a running dog then most terriers or even better a spaniel will do this. But if you go and get yourself a well bred terrier, bred to go to ground, you could be asking for trouble. You could be bushing with your terrier at 8 or 9 months onwards but if he was to go to ground this would be a disaster. If you held him back to a proper age to enter to ground then your terrier must always be wearing a locating collar and you'll always be carrying a shovel. Remember a fox could be lieing anywhere to ground. Rabbit burrows, drains, badger settes or an earth. So if you want a bushing dog get the ideal type ,if you want a working terrier then get a well bred pup. Working terriers are a specialist type and good luck. JMHO Quote Link to post

kvnmcwebn 0
I only ever had one jrt but based on my experience you cant go far wrong with one. Got him at 13 weeks old, he grew up with my toddler who was rough with him, never once turned on him. The thing about the jrt's is that they are highly trainable, so you might be able to train them to leave earths alone. Mine was good for bushing i could point him in he'd check the area was clear, pretty good nose - he wasnt as happy to go into the thick thorny shit though as my beddy (which is another option thats very good with kids and bushing). Anyway im ramblin. -best kevin Quote Link to post
