Grim Reaper 1
How old do you have to be to apply for a licence is it 18? Silly question but, exactly what type of licence are you asking about mate? They each have different age limits as well as having their own conditions, and so to give a good answer, you need to expand or qualify the question a wee bit more? Hope this helps you in your enquiries. Regards, Grim Edited for typo's. Edited July 11, 2008 by Grim Reaper Quote Link to post

Grim Reaper 1
Oh sorry i ment for a firearms license i was told by surrey police(i think it was) the age is 14 but if someone older than 17 with a firearms license could buy something like a shotgun and than gift it to the person under the age of 17 Right, ok . . . . . . my understanding of it is: (and i am more than willing to stand corrected on this) Firearms Certificate is required to possess a: Rim Fire rifle (R/F) usually a cartridge that has no percussion cap in the centre, and is fired by the cartridge rim being pinched by the firing pin. There are various calibres are availabe. Centre Fire rifle (C/F) rifle (again, various calibres are available, and the noticable difference is that with these cartridges, there is a little percussion cap in the centre of it - hence the name C/F Tactical Shotgun [Correct?] - those shotguns that are usually permitted for use by the millitary or police, and which are capable of holding more than 2 cartridges in the magazine. Any of the permissable ammunition required for the above rifle types Air rifles (PCP or spring powered) whose power levels exceed the UK legal limit of 12 foot/pounds. Shotgun Certificate A Shotgun Certificate is required to possess a: Side-by-Side (S/S), or an Over & Under (O/U) shotgun - they come in various 'Bores' or 'Guages', from 4 bore, and upto 20 bore. They commonly take 2 cartridges. Pump Action shotgun - a type of shotgun whose magazine has been made, or proffessionally modified, so as to make it impossible for the magazine to take more than 2 cartridges at any one time. Any of the permissable ammunition for the above shotgun types. That is my understanding of it, but like I say, I am willing to be corrected. If others know anything i have written above is incorrect, please let me know and i will make ammendments to this post. Shane, as Sean has also said, it would be better to get the full story from the horse's mouth by contacting your local police station and asking for the contact details of the Firearms Enquirey Officer (FEO). And by the way, a person with an FAC cannot buy a shotgun and gift it to anyone (under 17 or over 17), unless the buyer also possesses a shotgun cert. I also have to say that they wouldn't be able to gift a shotgun to anyone else, unless the giftee also has a shotgun cert. Hope this is helpful? ChrisJones 7,975
Internet advice can be good but all licences will be issued at the discretion of the firearms officer. As no one has mentioned security, yet, I'll be the first. You'll need an approved cabinet bolted to an external wall and it needs to conform to BS7558. Contact your local firearms officer and they'll tell you exactly what you need to do. Quote Link to post
