had borders since i was about 11, in west yorkshire as opposed to east. Don't believe this shite that marko is passing onto you that borders are slow and don't try to rats until they are 10-12 months. I take my pups out with the adults from the day they have had their jabs, if they get too tired I slip them in the game bag. Borders are put down as being slow to enter because half of the people are too frightened to do anything with them as they cost £400. No dog ever learnt anything by being left at home in kennels until it was 12 months old. If you've got a Border and it isn't showing serious amounts of interest by the time its 12-18 months old, and catching stuff regular, it's probably never gonna make the grade. even if it does, why would you want to breed from something that took until it was 2 or 3 year old to enter.

People stating that Borders are slow to enter, is why borders are in the state they are in now. A top show breeder once said to us 'borders aren't patterdales, and they don't enter at the same sort of rate' - what did north country farmers do before there were patterdales? They work borders!

P.S we don't get over your way with ours... but we do get to north lincs.

I've got Borders of Oxcroft/ Warrfinn lines, Very, very good ratters. When people say Borders don't do this and Borders don't do that 99% of the time they have never had Borders and know feek all about them. I like them because they are very steady in most working situations and very loyal. MRD

Hiya bigmal

I'd certainly meet up with you and take you down into north lincs when we next go down, but it depends on the crops/vegetation dying down at the end of the year. If you just wanted a mooching day out, and your dog is well broken to stock, if you were willing to travel over here I'd take you out on some of my permission, mostly rabbit, and whatever else comes up during the day. We're near Skipton.

As for people decrying you for hunting rabbit... most of these people on BTW will say you shouldn't work them to rabbit as when you enter them to ground to fox, they will more than likely give gob to rabbits while to ground, because rabbits will live in the side galleries to fox.

To be fair, most of these people on that website have never worked a dog (they'll tell you different), most of their info is gained from reading plummer books and the likes.

Burt Gripton once told me if you can't tell the difference of what your terrier is baying at to ground, you shouldn't be in the game! Most terriers will open up to rabbit to ground, giving excited squeals, but when they are at big stuff, they'll bay like thunder! Or just get stuck in! it's a pain in the arse when they open up to rabbit to ground, but it's a bloody thick terrier that you can't call off rabbit! If I saved my terriers purely for fox to ground, I'd get little digging and probably little enjoyment, and a dog to feed 12 months of the year for perhaps a dozen digs!

PM me if you fancy a trail over for a day out.

People keeping borders just for rats and rabbits plus the fact that if they don't make the grade they can always have a litter is the reason borders today are in the mess they are. If you want a ratting/bushing dog buy a plummer and if you want to win rosettes get something pedigree and show at crufts not working dog shows.

Hi butler Can you tell me why you are so biast against Border Terriers I't one of the only pedigree breads were the working ability is still bred into them. I have a border terrier because I liKe the breed it's a good companian good natured abediant, trained to the whistle and I love seing him hunt we are not all able to dig foxes and even want to, I bought my dog for a companian after a very longe illnes and he as give me some thing to keep me going .So do'nt have a go at others doing there own thing, aspecialy when your talking a load of BOLLOCKS.

Hi Big Mal,I remember we were both posting on BTW at the same time and both got the same reaction - anyway this site is a million times better, and not full of middle aged women in self knitted jumpers with paw prints on.

I have certainly found people on this site to be very helpful and had a great night out lamping with some guys off here a couple of weeks back.  Although some of those that were most unhelpful do post, e.g. D B.

Like you my dog is a companion first, but I do like to see her hunt so hopefully I can break her to ferrets so I can get out this winter with some of the members round my way.  I understand that people love digging to their dogs but I don't see why we can't all do what we want without being bombasted.Good luck bud.

p.s. you seem like a really helpful person Shell/Malc, any tips for breaking the dogs to stock, ferrets etc.  Mine is ok with horses and cows but not so clever with sheep

my border has been out with the other borders and lurcher and whippet since she was 13 wks old she comes of good working stock and is coming along ok everyone has an opinion but as i aint a kid no more and have just on 30 yrs experience ratting i think i know what im on about it aint shite just an opinion at least i was answering his question and then everyone else is jumping on the band wagon maybe thats why some posts take longer to get answers because of smart arses by the way i love my border and would not swop her for anything also i want my dog to work long term and not jib when she gets to 4-5 yrs of age but i should of said i didnt have her taking any quarry till she is 10-12 mths old i didnt stop her looking and getting involved with the other dogs.
