Guest SJM
What are the legalities of carrying a telescopic baton to protect yourself whilst out and about in the countryside? I am not up to scratch on current laws so if someone could advise? Basically I want to know is it legal to be carrying it even if I have not used it to defend myself? and if stopped and searched with it even if I have not used it would I be likely to be charged or detained? lurchergrrl 1,441
Good question SJM ... I usually fool myself into thinking my dogs would protect me, but there's been more than one occasion when I wished for something "just in case".

Guest SJM
Having been involved in a few altercations in the past, one where I was outnumbered 3-1 and miles from anywhere, it made me think I do not want to be in a situation in the future where I am completely unprotected. I always carry a small gutting knife, but wouldnt use that unless it was a life threatening situation ie kill or be killed I would prefer to have something on me which I can just draw out and clunk them with it if they start grabbing at me or whatever. Ive been looking into various koshes batons etc with a view to carrying one at all times, but am just wondering what the legalities are with them? I know your allowed to carry those spray cans and personal alarms but where does the line end as to how much you are allowed to arm yourself?
Guest SJM
a small shovel if you ferreting or digging , or a hunting bar. nowt wrong with them lad I was meaning more if you were just out walking with your dog(s) as it would be a bit tiresome to have to carry a heavy item such as a spade. I know that you can get priest type things which you could probably get away with saying its for killing the rabbits but how would it work if you had a police issue extending baton or similar?? Would they view that as you being armed???

socks 32,253
uless you are well versed in the methods of using one and knew the areas to strike for maximum effect and it was a one on one scenario an asp batton whatever you want to call it is useless .... if 2 or 3 people rushed you, you would be lucky to strike one of them and the effectiveness of the strike would be pathetic as you would be to busy trying to watch what the others were doing and where they were ..... you would be far better off using mace or pepper spray .... if you feel in danger make sure the would be assailents are down wind of you ... if not then position yourself so that they are ... do not give any warnings or early indication that you have anything that could damage them ... have it to hand and conceled .... hold your nerve allow them to get within a foot of arms reach and then in one movement remove it and spray making sure you arc accross the 2 .. 3 .. 4 would be assailents ... once done then get out of there dont hang around ... never empty the full contents always keep some back in reserve ........... Guest WILF
It is illegal to carry anything that could be classed as an offensive weapon........in the eyes of the law, the only protection you need is the police..........funny I know!!
mackem 27,584
OC is the best of the lot, oleoresin capsicum AKA pepper spray, its not nicknamed the liquid-bullet for nothing but the effects arent pretty Not legally allowed to own or use any pepper or mace sprays in this country
Guest SJM
@ WILF So basically whatever I carry to protect myself, Im in the wrong then? The way I see it is I would rather be in the nick for carrying an offensive weapon, or using it on a potential mugger/rapist/assaulter than be there for being mugged/raped/assaulted - its a bad world out there and it only seems to be getting worse
