best sight hound for rabbits?

Recommended Posts

mike and pennymeadow - wonderful looking dogs there gents, really smashing. always had leggier/taller lurchers meself, but moving to smaller house soon, so seriously thinking of getting pure whippet. what are they like at retrieving? would only be working on rabbits, perhaps have a go at hares.

ive got a whipppet grew can run alot more than 70 yrds sheel do two mins on a strong winter hare , catch a dozen rabbs flush a roe but i know when she has had enough , maybe there are pure whippets thta can do the biz as they were bred for rabbits and coursing under rules and raceing ,but i would say these little roach backs etc feching leave them were they are get a good straight backed cross whippet i think all the breeders who have decent dogs will have a bit of something in them etc cheers

whippetts have pace but no stamina you dont get them running fast for anymore than 60 or 70 yards which 99% of the time is usless for hares

you cant go wrong with a pitbull greyhound or collie greyhound but definitely not a full whippett

What a load of Bo****ks.

have you ever owned a whippet????

well said Mally.

having coursed with the EAWCC & VRWCC they definatly get more than 60yds well they do if they are well fed well looked after & fit.

i've run lure coursing meetings for 10 years now (under the name of the Northwest LCC) with distances upto 800yds dogs sometimes having to run this 5 times to win the final these are testing courses not the 150yds 3 gate things often run at game fairs for the lurchers.

anyone doubting a whippets ability get yourself out with a decent whippet and i think you'll be suprised.

i couldnt have put it any better, whippets from the right lines will do a good minute and half behind a fit fen hare,i know that as i have ran plenty of the them.i not saying they will catch alot of hares but you will see somr very fast and furious coursing.

If got a whippet pup at 14 weeks and she does 70yds full sprint in about 5 second and still can turn round and bomb it down the field again.Personally I think that stamina is not an issue with whippets what they lak is made up by speed and deturmination
