Neil Cooney. 1
Yep long enough at it to know it's the most over used piece of kit. Valuble in the right hands, used properly. Quote Link to post
Guest pip
Neil what about these lads starting out that are beat when the box packs in?I surely know of heavy handed incidents when lads with strong backs and weak minds have injured dogs but in the right hands i find it invaluable.Oh if you ve any about your not using let us know i could be doing with a spare Quote Link to post
Neil Cooney. 1
Pip there's a bar or two in my van the whole time. But why after putting my terrier to ground, giving him time to settle, then getting a mark with the box and then decideing when to start digging would I sink a hole? What would it prove or how would it help? Game can bury itself, cave ins and tunnels collapse and collars fail. Then get the bar. I know of a good terrier with one eye who'd agree that the bar is over used. Quote Link to post
Neil Cooney. 1
Incidently, does anyone remember searching the fields years ago for old buck rakes to cut up for bars. They were like gold dust and didn't even make the best bars,LOL. Quote Link to post
Guest blackntan
any young lad starting out in terriers will have got his interest through his father uncle or some family member or close friend he will not just wake up and think f**k it i ll buy a terrier and start digging .so he will have a bit of a notion whats going on what the tools are and how there used so i think you ve just made a bit of a dick out of yourself paul the plonkerbert gripton and joe shore could find any terrier to ground with a T BAR like a gas man or water boad man usesd the to find a leak not just for findind tubes No disrespect B&t but any good terrierman should be able to find the dog without the use of the locater ,unless they re exceptionally deep.A spit is indespensible in my opinion none tacken i was just pointing out used correctly a T BAR, is affective for location and the two old fellas i mentioned were past masters at the art , and all i hear is the box lately , we dont put are terriers under any pressure just send em in locate em dig to em and kill the red , if we get there and its dead all the better eh , are hounds dont mark the other fellas, ill have to get a tent to put up while we dig to block out the light though Quote Link to post

Ok time for clarification.Ihad a deban MK1 for my ferrets when i was 19 ,when i got my first terrier i adapted it onto a terrier collar and headed out with my late father in law.when he seen the collar he went mental,as was his form,"what the @@@@ is that @@@@@@@@ thing get that of the dog if you can t find the dog without that shit you shouldn t have one".I had no choice but to do as i was told ,and we dug all with no collar and dogs that had to give tongue,as he was an old trial man and thats what a sounder was supposed to do.Thats how i was taught and when i used the deban it didn t work more often than it did therefore i was glad of what i had learnt.A few years ago i bought a deban MK3 and it was fine in 3-4 ft holes but on one occasion the dog was in on the side of a river bank and the box was reading 10ft pin pointing at that depth over a approx 5-6ft area.Where do you start?I used the spit and while i wasn t getting the tube i was getting bumping from one of the spit holes. So unless i get a different result with the new b@f ill still be relyimng on the spit. dev 227
have to agree with pip on this one, when i was a young lad starting out we had to use the spit to locate the action below as we couldnt afford a locator, invaluable piece of kit IMO, if the box is showing that the terrier has settled in one spot but no sound can be heard then a quick listen through the bar hole will tell you if the dog is "in grips" or just trying to dig or push on, also for finding the tube incase the quarry has dug itself in.i wouldnt go digging without one Quote Link to post
