Guest ooty
f**k me fellas give the young lad a break !!!!!!! if he doesnt ask he wont know ! paul they're called a sounding bar and are for finding/locating your terrier when its in ground and when he has no locator on, or if the locator fails. get to a welder/engineer and he'll knock you up one. tell him you want it made out of stainless steel. 3 to 4ft long with a 1ft t handle. Exactly, used when there's no other way of locating the terrier when all else fails. Then why do lads locate their terrier and then sink a bar to see if the locator is telling the truth. The bar can be the most over used tool of the trade and in the hands of a fool can be dangerous and not help the terrier in any way. Well said Alfred,Neil ,i ve been using deban for years and never trusted them and therefore never left home without the spit, hopefully the b&f will give me more confidence.I think while working with a deban box you need to make sure the box is telling the truth.I also find when working with pups a bar can give you the heads up what the terriers at ,rather than open holes to a inexperienced ,and sometimes ultimately useless terrier, which could be messing ,stuck or barking at a scent.OMO on the deben subject.twice iv had there battary packs.both times they went wrong and didnt hold charges and the packs fell to bits within the first season even when kept charged, the second time i conplained and after looking at my pack ,said i must of had it longer than the garantee, even though i had the garantee.when your crawling through hedges and muddy ditches in the dead of stormy nights its going to get bashed torn and dirty their gear is expencive and aint up for the job,it falls to bits.never used a probe.would of thought it hard to tell if you break through on to your dog instead of the easth at 2 ft of hard clay. moxy 617
I use a mild steel probe for mole work, rust would never be a problem on something that thick...and mild steel is one hell of a lot cheaper too. You will find that the price of stainless is on its arse at the moment, Approx £3 kg for new bar. Maybe a little more than mild steel but there isnt much in it. It is certainly cheaper than EN8 ( hardened ) steel. Quote Link to post

Just wonderin when deben started making rechargable battery packs for locators?? Edited to say, if you thought it hard to tell if you break through to your dog with a sounding bar, it would seem that you don't dig that often! Not looking for a slanging match, FLATCAP'S your man fer that. But after barring in do you not put your ear to the hole to listen to what's happening? As Pip has said in an earlier post invaluable for letting you know what's going on below ground. Edited July 11, 2008 by Eamon.Mc Quote Link to post

Neil Cooney. 1
Under no circumstances would we sink a hole with a bar to a terrier, especially a youngster, to satisfy my own curiosity. It's dangerous and by making that small hole your just putting extra pressure on the quarry and terrier. How often do you sink a hole and hear the quarry push by a terrier? Bad enough letting in light and air but then you see lads roaring down the hole telling their terrier he's a good boy LOL. Most game gets by it's terrier as the terrier man is crowning in because there is now extra danger to the quarry as well as the terrier it's been facing. So why would you put extra pressure on it before you even start digging? The bar is usually used by terrier men who don't know whats going on and need extra confidence. JMHO. Quote Link to post

Guest pip
Neil sorry but i have to disagree,90% of my digging has been done with a bar and no box.If the quarry is going to move then he ll move when your a few inches frombreaking through so a spit hole won t encourage or discourage him. ALTHOUGH ONE THING I CAN T HAVE AND WON T HAVE IS ANYONE TALKING OR SHOUTING OR EVEN CHASTISING A BARKING DOG TIED UP WHILE YOUR TERRIER IS IN,SPIT HOLE OR NOT.WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THAT TELLING THE DOG HE S A GOOD BOY WILL IMPROVE HIS WORK STYLE.tHEY RE NOT SHEEP DOGS OR SPRINGERS IF THEY RE GOING TO WORK THEY RE GOING TO WORK WHETHER YOU SAY ........ "GO ON UP TO HIM TIGER" "GO GET HIM" OR THE ALL SO COMMON "GOOOO ON FELLA". Even when hunting hounds geeing a hound on does what?Causes him to lift his head. Geeing a lurcher on when he s coursing does what ? Distracts him temperarily. Shouting and roaring at a terrier when he s working does what? Confuses the timid ones and probably distracts the dogs that are locked on their work. OMO Neil your at the digging long enough to have used a spit surely and men who knew more than most had no other option and they wheren t doing it for confidence. No offence intended.
