I use that light digging bar for everything you mention. Additionally, our groundhogs can dig away from the dog, filling the tube behind them. The dog sometimes has a hard time digging through the fill to catch up. If I can figure out where the groundhog is and where it's heading, I'll sometimes bar down right in front of it to slow it down and give the dog a chance to catch up.

 

While our groundhog dens are not as elaborate as your brock's settes, they can be a pretty good maze underground. Early in the year when the groundhogs are smaller, and particularly when there's more than one in a den they can lead the dog on a merry chase underground. Many's the time I've listened to my dog go round and round trying to catch up to smaller ones. I'll sometimes bar down into a tube and rattle the bar just to give the groundhogs something to think about other than the dog and maybe change their pattern in the den to let the dog push them into a bolt or stop.

 

Finally, my dog is a bayer rather than a fighter. When I open on a stop there's sometimes a bit of room between my dog and the quarry. Rather than reaching in and risking a hand full of teeth or expecting the dog to take a muzzle full of teeth, I'll bar into the tube behind the groundhog to convince it that forward is better than backward so I can use my snare pole.

Correct dev ,i know now the type of bar FR is on about,its a hollow affair which you can listen through,i think.FR im talking about a spit just a t bar with a chisel type end on just for finding the tube.I heard some stories too about fellas pinning a dog to the floor of the earth with the spit.Used correctly the terrierman drives then wiggles then turns making the hole wider and on until he feels the soil lightening then takes it real carefully until through the roof,the bar should go no further than and inch through the roof

anyone who could spike theyre own dog shouldent be in the game. its a sound prob? not a knife.

and dev,pip i aint on about the rod with the hole down the centre. look back what i said about bars. you dont need them.to find .

hi all been after one of these for ages but without the correct name i have no chance any help i would appreciate cheers

i think they are called mars bars ? why some need one of them for in the days of the locator collar for i dont know.

first off i dont do hard dogs, dont do taleslike some, aint related to frain as you say and words of wisdom there is no wisdom
