Frost is a killer to a good nights lamping

Recommended Posts

My mate had been on earlier saying that I had talked rubbish about not bothering to go out because of the hard frost coming down earlier last night and tonight. He said lots went out and had a good night, but looking at the posts, saw young lampers been replying to some old ones. Can you back me up here guys or do you think it has no affect like my mate. Experience and a lot of poor nights have taught me other. Though I will say it seems to put off long ears far less than the old bunnies.

I dont run dogs after a bad frost because the ground is too hard and I dont wont to injure my dogs feet and maybe break their toes. I haven't been out the last couple of nights because of how hard the ground is.

If you value your dogs you won't run them, I was foolish myself and learned the hard way , ran a dog on a roe when there was a hard frost on the ground he came back with a shattered toe smashed to bits...its not worth it, just wait for better conditions, we owe our dogs that... ;)

Old long ears has to be out as she has no bury to get in.Rabbits will wait until the early morning sun to feed on frosty nights. The lurchers are ok running as long as the frost is not yet in the ground .In other words go out earlier. We tend to abandon running about 9pm and try a few rats around the farm buildings.

I ran my two dogs last night on hard ground took 7 rabbits and only missed a few,

Didnt realise how hard the ground was untill we did some fields which where well worn

by sheep. :o

Both dogs had injuries to feet especialy whipet gray x

I feel a complete tosser now for not using my head. :icon_redface:

Checked them this morning and ive hopefully got away with it, just some TLC and cleaning

left them rest today with some of last nights catch

Its easy not to realise the punishment these dogs take on hard ground and ive learned another lesson.
