i have a pit dog and in the last 2 weeks he has started to shake his head,so i have come to the conclusion that he has mites in his ears.Does anyone know how to treat this, cause i dont fancy giving them robbing bast*rds of vets my very scarce money.I shoved a cotton bud into his ear and it came out black and dirty,so i reckon im right.Your opinions will be gratefully recieved, thanks JIGSY.

should be able to get OTC ear mite meds.... i've done that a time or two in the past. friends with hounds seemed to have that stuff on tap because their hounds always had mites.

it might be that his ears are just dirty. do they stink to high heaven too? any swelling and redness? could be an ear infection and not mites.

lol cant imagine how that scene might have looked :whistling:

OTC means over the counter. should be easy to come by in any pet shop or super market. well it USED TO BE. havent needed it in ages.

best thing, if you're unemployed is just to clean the ears out best as you can. if they're dirty at all he'll likely get an infection at some point.

you should be able to find ear wipes made special for dogs. if not then here is a recipe i found for basic home made ear wash -

The recipe is for a huge batch, divide the amounts by 4.

16 oz witch hazel

4 tablespoons boric acid powder

16 drops gentian violet solution (1% solution)

Shake well before each use, use a dropper to fill the ear canal. Put a cotton ball in the ear, but don't push it right in, just at the edge to soak up the solution while you massage the base of the ear. The first time you use it you may want to reload the ear with the solution a couple of times to really flush it out, and keep cleaning out with cotton balls. Then use it twice a day for two weeks, then once a day for two weeks, then once monthly for maintenance. Swab the ear out with cotton balls, or those little make up pads work well too, to get it as dry as possible.

It does stain so you might want to do it outside.

there's other recipes out there that may be different. some use straight isopropyl alcohol or witch hazel...

at the very least, better than doing nothing at all. good luck with him :victory:

Sounds to me as if the animal has canker.

Very common and easily treated by over the counter stuff.

Just go and put your tight b'stard hand in your pocket and by something for the animal.

It's not difficult.
