will.f11 24
Hi, I am 13 and have been shooting with air guns for years but my dad suggested that if he takes responsibility that I should get a shotgun. He used to have one but he thinks all the systems have changed since he shot so it would be usefull if you guys could tell me how much the whole process will set me back and how to do it! SportingShooter 0
At 13 you can hold a Shotgun Certificate but you cannot buy guns or ammunition until you are 17. You can have a gun given to you at 15 and be unsupervised to use it at 15. It would be useful if you and your father applied so that he can supply you with a gun and ammunition. So, there is nothing to stop you applying but until you are 17 you have some restrictions. For a first grant it is £50 per Cert. You will need to fill in the forms honestly and provide 4 photographs for the police to use. You will also need security, normally in the form of a gun cabinet. Regards SS Quote Link to post
will.f11 24
cheers mate. I live on a farm so I will be able to have the permission written down and just get my dad to sign it. Can I apply for a cert in my name and my fathers name because my dad wouldnt be able to buy me the gun without a license. I have quite a few friends over 20 with licenses that will supervise me when my dad cant so that shouldnt be a problem. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
cheers mate. I live on a farm so I will be able to have the permission written down and just get my dad to sign it. You don't need to specify land or permission for a Shotgun, Will, all you need is a reason to tell your Enquiry Officer, a good reason for you would be either Rough Shooting or Vermin Control, same for your father. You will each need to apply for separate licenses in your own names. This means that your father can buy a gun for you to use, but until you are 15 then you will need someone with you, over 21 to shoot it. It is always better if this person has a license too. So, in effect, If both you and your father have a license, then you can use your fathers gun in his company or in the company of another Certificate holder or someone over 21 if the gun is on your license. When you are 15, you can use it on your own. You can lend a gun from another SGC holder for 72 hours when you are 15 also. Regards SS Edited: Slightly Wrong Info, corrected. You do not need a reason or land for a SGC The SGC application form does not ask for an reason!!! Logically, it would be an idea to have an answer ready though, just in case you are asked. This is not a FAC where you have to justify EVERYTHING!!! Who are all these friends over 20 with licences, where do they shoot, what have they said about costs, storage, usage etc, can't help thinking if you know all these people you should talk to them for some close to home advice!!! will.f11 24
They werent sure about me having a license and because they were over 18 when the got theirs they didnt have to think about that. If my dad has a license and has to supervise me anyway would I be able to just get him a license because there wouldnt be much point me having 1 if I cant buy a gun lol Quote Link to post

You can't get him a SG Certificate. There is nothing to stop you getting the form, filling in a lot of it for him and paying for it, but he will have to complete some of it, find a referee and get some pictures taken, in simple terms HE has to apply! Country Life 0
You could ask for a "coterminous" licence for £60 and have both FAC and SGC.. save "loads o money" Good Luck which ever way you go about it. it just takes time...loads of time in my case ie, 6 months probation at gun club, the full membership, only then could I apply, as I had no land to shoot over at the time. and boy was it hard work getting permissions, Quote Link to post
