A " Spotting Scope " is a telescope, isn't it? Much the same as Birders use? Only there's a dinky and extremely light weight scope that's been around for some time now. I can't honestly remember the maker, but it's a good enough one. Called the " Midget ". Ye might want to google that? I bought my wife one and it was amazingly good.

Probably cheaper than a " Spotting Scope " because it doesn't have that 'specialised' title.

Oh, in that case ye definitely talking my language then, CC  Only a less than good scope is worse than no scope. And good scopes don't come cheap. Opticron is the base line. They're a few ton a piece. Then ye'll want a decent tripod. If f*ckin soon adds up!

No, that " Midget " that I mentioned is about as 'cheap' as it gets and still a cracking little piece of kit. Gave my bloody Opticron a run for its money!

But ye've got to be pretty well enamoured of someone to kit them out, mate. We're not talking a drink here. Maybe a good Field Guide would fit the envisaged budget a bit better? If they haven't got the 'new' Collins Bird Guide .....

I am also about to choose a new spotting scope. I have seen advertised a scope and tripod kit for £150 at London Camera Exchange. This was in a RSPB magazine. I don't know how good these are, haven't looked myself yet, but might be a good starting point if you have a LCE branch near you?

CC; Ye Mum's Birthday and ye going halves? Now the Dog can see the rabbit, mate!

May I offer my Best Possible suggestion? If this isn't perfect, then I'll sit down and shut the f*ck up.

For Years I wanted a Ventile jacket. The S.A.S use Ventile, because it's ...... well, it's simply the b*llocks! I eventually got rich enough that I could actually afford one. I've had it about five years now. It's the one that c*** Bill Oddie gets given him by " Country Innovations ". Not cheap! But going halves? Ye Mum should be worth it ;)

It's just Astonishingly good! I never get wet in it (Eire, remember! Land of the permanent, torrential downpour!) and yet I never get hot in it either. It really is one of those things I'd grab, in case of fire.

Nope. Just sat here and thought hard about my one. Simply cannot fault it!

If she hasn't got one? It's what I'd have bought my own Mum. Probably about £180 by now? With the hood. Hood's essential.

'Scope worth having? Time ye throw in the Sherpa Tripod, Skua Cover and make it a mid range Opticron? F*ck me! Not looking at a lot of change out of £500 there, mate! Leave That sort of thing to Dad! :icon_eek:

Geoff; LCE are f*cking excellent! Bought my rig in their Southampton shop. They'll offer sound advice. But a ton fifty? I wouldn't waste my money on Any scope and pod set up that was going for that piddling amount. Check out Opticron. There's ye starting point. Leave Leicia and Swarovsky to the millionaires. But, if ye ever get a chance to peep through someones Swarry? Do. Ye'll see instantly what they paid for! Wanking material!
