howard 0
My 1st terrier was a Lakeland X Russel it was a good all round dog bushing ferreting bolting foxes or mixing it and killing some if they didnt bolt but now looking back over a number of terriers I would have to say I would prefer to rely on the better line pure bred types than on a cross jmho Quote Link to post

borderboy 80
I much prefer non descript x bred terriers something about them always appeals to me... I have a borderxrussell here whos my bushing/ratting dog and shes a grand knock about steady as anything keen and happy mouching around with me... I've been umming and arring abouth putting a lakelandy patterdale of a mates over her whos very similar in temperment but a little more fiery and bold, in fact i have one of his nieces here who is a grand little dog but far too strong willed for my liking and very much self centered... so i cant decide whether i'd get something in the middle if i went for it...!?! waz77 15
Ive found fells with a dash of border to be very good digging dogs, but i think its more about the strain than any particular breed or cross Quote Link to post

Neil Cooney. 1
Before the fell types came to Ireland the Bull/Russell was usually the type used by someone looking for a terrier with a bit of fire in it. Years ago I remember a 3/4 Russell 1/4 Staff that came out of Dublin. He was out of a Russell bitch called Mini and a half bred dog called Bully. This terrier ended up in Co.Meath in the hands of a man who dug 12 months, 52 weeks a year. Tiny was dug to 3 days a week maybe 2 or 3 times a day. In a days digging he could acount for maybe 3,4 or 5 head of game. Add it up. He did this for 3 or 4 seasons before being killed by a useless Saluki lurcher. Although Tiny would come out after a while he was probably the most usefull (but not the gamest) terrier I've ever known. He rarely got touched. 2 or 3 Tiny's in a mans kennel would cover some vermin control. Quote Link to post
