Of all the things - why running dogs??

Recommended Posts

We all love our lurchers and I suppose are passionate about it to varying degrees .................... funny though......but no-one ever talks about why........................ and where they got their interest from.

Here's you chance to tell us 'what does it' of you..... for instance ......

is the the thrill of the chase?

the outwitting of nature with a animal you've bred and trained?

is it the attraction of the great outdoors?

the whip of slip and anticipation of a catch under lamp light?

the primeval instinct to hunt and gather?

the freedom and tranquility of wandering miles without seeing a sole?

is it the companionship and union of man an beast?

are you drawn by the thrill of the kill?

Do you hunt purely for wages and as a mean to living?

Personally, for me from being a young age I had a strange obsession for the great outdoors, and was into lifestock, pigeons, rabbits, ferrets, hunting, trapping, birds.......seemingly this was inbred as I was brought up in a steel town, with no influences of this way of life whatsoever.

Along with birds or prey, and big cats I had a strong interest in anything that could be used to hunt and catch things with!!!!!!...................from being 7 or 8 I became obsessed with the thought of shaggy coated lurcher types chasing hares and rabbits.....................I dreamnt every night of chasing and catching...........even tho I knew nothing really about it........ I onced whittnessed a hare course from a train window on the way to cleethorpes as a boy that had be completely hooked.................... this was quashed somewhat in my teenage years when I found out what my 3 peice suit was for...and after settling down with kids and wife........... the passion returned......

anyway.......here I am today, still, with strong passion for running dogs.......only now I live it

I can honestly say that in all my years of running lurchers..... I still get a buzz as I gear up..and head off into the night in anticpiation of a good bag......

my little boy is 5 this year, so next season, he'll be out lamping with me...cant wait...

Would be interested to see what triggered your interest in the sport............................. lets hear it!!!

its great to get out with the dogs in the countryside and fresh air .I think its also the excitement thats got me hooked,no better sound then the sound of your terrier under the ground working its quarry. The crack is always good with the lads getting on to each other and its always rewarding to get a few kills with the dogs you put so much time and effort into.

"The crack is always good with the lads getting on to each other " scent i always knew it but is this you coming out? :icon_eek:

i have always been a country man and love anything to with the hunting and nature, however, for a reason i don't even no running dogs have always applied to me. then when i was really young my godfather took me coursing, and since that day I've never looked back.

it is also the all roundness of the breed, if another dog can do it so can a lurcher. obviously this is pretty vague due to all the different breeding.

every time i go out the lurchers alway amaze me with another trick that they have up the sleave.

the only other breed that i really admire is the terrier.

well it all started when i was only 6-7 years old. me dad used to go out hunting with his dogs and i asked him if i could come 1 night. i went with him and his mates and i couldent stop smilein when the dogs were runnin a rabbit, hare or fox (pre ban) then he bought me my first whippetx when i was 10. i trained her up with me dad`s dogs and had her for ni on 10 years. and never let me down and was always ready for the night ahead.and i have had lurchers ever since. im now 30 and i still get the smile on me face when the dog is coursin it`s pray. my son is more in to his fotty at the moment. but me 8 year old lassie loves lampin. i take her out a few nights a week in the winter months. she is gettin her first lurcher when my lurcher bitch has her pups. i just hope she loves the sport as much as i do.

i got envolved with lurchers when i was 17 bit of a late comer. I grew up rough shooting with my father and my fathers friend we wornt in any syndicate or gun club or anything just out for the pot i had no real intrest in school or football i just wanted to be down the river with my Owl boy waiting for the duck to come in or huning about in the hope that the lab would flush a pheasant or two, i love it i loved being out in the sticks if i was'nt out shooting with my da i was out walking the dog.

I remember one night when we got home from walking the river we were sitting in the kitchen having a drop of tea, my dad was showing how to strip and clean the gun and was telling me stories of old it was one story that got rooted in my mind, my dad told me about my grandad and his brother and how they were given a greyhound that was said to be no good, he told me how as young boys they would go out into the country with the greyhound and armed with catapults in the hope of nabbing a hare and if catching a hare they would sell it and live like kings for a couple of days buying sweets, going to the ritz as my dad would call it and buying fish and chips.

this story always stuck in my mind from i was a young boy, everytime we talked about the old days this dog would come up a different tale everytime, now my dad was'nt into running dogs and we never had one we were alway shooting either with the air rifle or with the shot gun this was my dads passion as it is mine.

unfortunely my father passed away when i was 17 and i was alone when it came to the hunting seen i had to wait for another year before i could apply for my FAC and to be honest i could'nt face applying for it at that time. A whole year without hunting i could'nt bare the thought of it.

on day while buying a my monthly sooting mags a came across the countrymans weekly i dont why i bought it i surpose its because its all i could do back then that is read about hunting. anyway week after week i was reading tales of lurchers, lamping working with ferrets catching feathered game i was hooked my intrest was that deep it was like it was there all my life. 5 years later i have my own two lurchers which i trained and entered myself and im loving it.

its a hard life style to beat long live the lurcher and though's who work them, i could write for ever on this topic but ill bring it to a close before i put yous all to sleep :11: Toggle Side Panel

Happy hunting all

yours in sport

Saw my first Lurcher as a starry eyed youngster of 8...had to travel to a place called Barrhead which is out by Glasgow airport roughly 30miles from where I live. This was in the 60's before the [bANNED TEXT] was conceived and hardly anyone had a car. Paid the pricely sum of £5 for her a big shaggy coated collie x. We took her camping with us and that was it for me she caught rabbit after rabbit and retreived them live to hand. Never had any other kind of dog in my house since and never will.
