jon15 14
Your vet is right, it is the cancer risk that is the problem and that should only come in later life, it should not affect him in any way he will still be able to sire pups as he has one descended, good luck with him. Quote Link to post
lucky 578
i had my terrier castrated following the vets advice and it has'nt affected his working ability at all.....just a shame i'll never get a pup from him. Quote Link to post

Lennard 10
Same here...my dog has one testicle inside...but I quote from an earlier post of someone...they don't catch hares with their testicles...no problem here with the prey drive, muscle or dog-dog aggresion so he's prolly got enough testosterone. Publications on cancer risk are variable...some recommend removing the testicle some not...a lot agree on an increased risk later in life...but it is a risk not a certainty... The operation would involve anesthising and cutting the dog...that is a real risk. I don't take it...if it is growing later in life I'll decide what to do... victor 10
will get over weight alot easyer if you cut him, odnt know about drive. would be a shame to have a hunting dog with out drive. hope it works out for you Quote Link to post

Guest foxyjo.
He should still be able to have pups with one ball. Had my GSD done as both of his were retained. I wanted him alive and healthy for as long as possible so had to give up any idea of pups from him which is a shame as he's a cracking dog. I decided not to take the risk and leave them, it's not only late in life that they can go cancerous. Testicles have been found to contain things like claws, and hairs and other strange bits that they start growing all by themselves. A mates dog died of cancer at 2. Good luck with him anyway. blackpack 70
cheers for all the replies Quote Link to post
springfield 20
Have seen this before know of a guy that named his dog "Ball" Hence the problem. From my times its been seen mainly in racing dogs, The retained testicle has been cut out and the other left,Leaving the dog able to sire pups if needed to do so in future. Don't like castrating/spaying any dog. Quote Link to post
jon15 14
The only reason that testicles are out side the body is so they can produce live sperm which they can't at do at body temperature so as long as he has one descended testicle he will be able to sire pups, hope this helps.
