i liked the fella, though never met him personally i was witness to the Last Chimney he pulled down with his unique method, and his interest in steam and architecture, also annoying the neighbours with his tunnels, what a guy,we don't have enough 'legends' like him,and a pint of guiness or two well the guy was just a bloke captured on tv wasn't he,my personal admiration for him developed when i saw him walking on top of one of the chimneys he was about to bring down,

he was walking round the top of this chimney and there was a bit of wind blowing ,he walked on the top like it was a calm day,i mean these chimneys are so small on the top and way so high, man such nerves of steel in a placcid man,

Higgins.

Seen most of his dvds, used to know a neighbour of his many years ago, said his garden was like a scrapyard!

Fantastically intelligent man with a real feeling for his topics. RIP Fred. We will be lucky to see his like again.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who can climb a ladder to the top of one of those old stacks, then stroll about up there like it's his own f*cking garden, chattering away without a care in the world? Got To have a spot of pure Immortality about him, surely to god?! :notworthy:

well he is definitely immortal now isn't he,i suppose if you can live your life the way he did,(scrapyard back garden or not)

you would experience an happiness through not conforming to society and any authority, that is his 'Real Appeal' and the reason why so many loved him!

I had the privilege to meet him too at a steam rally some years ago, although I never spoke to him I sat and listened to him along with a lot of others. He had charisma in abundance, loved the work he did and made what he liked, interesting to others. He brought to life the age of steam and Victorian England through his total love of it all and his enthusiasm is what made it interesting to others.

A TRUE LEGEND
