Im not a terrier man buy any accounts, so i shouldnt realy have an opinion!...but i do..lol.

If i have a pup, thats about 18 months and i think he is ready, i would let him have a go at being dug too...if he comes away, thats not great, but i wouldnt cull him for it!...just chain him out and let him see the game dug with a made dog...i would let the pup watch the made dog rag-up on the game (once humanly dispatched of course) but i would NOT let the pup have any contact with the quarry...if it came out, but gets a rag on dead game, is the rag up not a reward?...should the dog not have to work for reward?...i think it makes them keener to get to there game, they get well up in 'drive' if this is done...imo anyway.

Once the dog is going/started (had about a dozen digs) THEN comes away, i wouldnt be happy at all...i would chain the pup out at digs, until it was going ape shit to be at his game...and i wouldnt let him go to ground again, until he was like this...then i would let him try and get dug to again.

If he came out after this, then maybe it just wasnt ment to be?!...i would stop with the dog.

That is just what we have done in the past...im not saying its right or wrong, just what i have done.

Kye...

PS...good topic, i look forward to hearing what the much more exsperianced lads think!

"Personally I don't" you say.

You'd be better of getting out of the game. You've been listening to too many macho men.

if i had a terrier that was past 16 months and lets say in a easy enuff earth came off a fox a would be woried, the same dog would be given 2 more easy type chances,if it did the coming of trick again the dog would no longer be with me,this dog wuold also have been schooled at the dig side from 9 month onwards and given its first look at an easy fox any thing after 14 month ,the best dogs dont come off foxes unless they are dead !!

Didn't say you were a macho man.

It takes a lot of work/hours and experience for a terrier to learn it's trade.

A terrier thats well bred and starts of well with some proper handling and some good luck should go on to be a worker.

A youngster thats done well on a few (or many) digs could go to ground and for some reason come away.

Untill we have x-ray vision we'll never know whats happening down below. We can only guess.

Remember we're talking about a youngster here not a trusted worker. With a seasoned worker you should know what's happening.....but not always.

For these reasons a youngster should be given a few cracks of the whip.

Entering terriers is an art and believe me there's very few men can do it consistantly.

There's a lot of well bred, game young terriers put down every year my macho men (usually 'cause thier mates are watching).

Pity.

The fact that the young dog is traveling and finding game is a good start,He mabe just hasnt realised what he is meant to do in this situation,I wouldnt be writtng him off at this early stage.I would run him on with an experienced dog in a handy earth for a dig or two just to shw him what he is meant to do.Then try him on his own in an easy earth if he keeps comming away then this is the form he will always have and he no longer deserves a place in your kennels

the best jockeys treat every horse differently, the great ones know exactly how to treat a horse to get the best out of it.

The the whole reason for messing about with pups and young dogs is not so much for them but for yourself. you should be watching every move they make, every reaction so that when the time comes to start them you know what they need from you, handling wise. we can all take a collar off and stand back, it's when the dog needs more from you that terriermen stand out.

how many times have you given a pup a tap or a shout for attacking the neighbours dog, someones cat, your other terriers, then you take the collar off and expect it to go,travel and attack. I'm not surprised if a few of mine get a bt confused.

the next time you feed and train a well bred dog for 12-18 months and it comes away a bit unsure of itself, sleep on it before you do anything.
