Blindley heath and Bletchingly

Recommended Posts

Spent many a Sunday at Blindley Heath giving the greyhounds a run. The private betting trials held in the 70's & 80's were something else, amazing ammounts of cash bet & it was only worth competing if you had a very good dog.It was a shame the Crittendons couldn't getting permission to run the place as a flapping track when they bought it, the place would be a goldmine.

I went to a few whippet/lurcher meetings run by Ted Fox & the odd one on a Saturday run by Thameside lurcher club.

When it got sold on again the owners put a great deal of money into getting it back into shape & tried to make a go of it but the All Weather surface they put down which runs very slow put a great deal of greyhound owners off. Don't know what sort of state the place is in now the last i heard is that they just gave up on it.

Wouldn't have a clue now about the lurcher owners down this way that would run there but i would think you would get a few whippets from the SE club & all types of dog that run at Sussex Longdogs providing dates didn't clash. Small entry fee(£20-£50) winner take all races would attract a few greyhounds i reckon.

Went to Bletchingly a couple of times to watch the whippets run, last time i was there must be nine or ten years ago.

i spoke to the owner of nestledown this morning apparantly the crittendens have got a pub now,and the tracks new owner keeps it in good working order ,but theres been no racing there for a long time, and i just thought it would be worth an ask if enough people were interested ,and i knew what sort of money i could offer, and get some sort of meeting going again.i remember Ted Fox very well , he had sam the man and dingo at the time, how long ago was that? :icon_eek:

The pub is down Hastings way i think. I remember when they bought the track & kennels off of V Ford, they came down with just over three hundred odd thousand cash in two carrier bags

Its a tough one when starting up but if i was you at first i would try & do a deal in relation to how many times they have to put the hare around. If they think they are going to get a regular earner hopefully they would be accommodating

Got to be thirteen or fourteen years at least, he was an old dog when i saw him. Great little dog with plenty of heart, he escaped from somewhere & got run down & killed if i remember right.
