FJager 0
You've told me to take a chill pill, I think you need to OD on them, you obviously want everyone to listen to you and know one else, I was an accomplished military shooter both on the range and in the weeds, and still hunt successfully using the football field method, so have a fair idea of range estimation using the mark1 eyeball, perhaps I can use the simpler methods better than you as I am obviously a lot more competant than your know it all self, I really think with your rot you are showing your inexperience in the field, show us a few hunting pics please and not the ones of rats shot with an airgun. If you find this simple method difficult don't criticise and put people off, try ranging a target on a '2 way range' if you can manage it here then you can do it successfully anywhere. Once accomplished with this method your brain can calculate it subconsciously as the rifle is going to the shoulder, not buggarising around with other bits of kit. If you don't want people to correct you Deker don't be a no it all, open your eyes, you MAY learn something, just like the rest of us, I am constantly changing my ideas and tactics to suit, its called progress, BUT on this issue, it works, so you won't change my opinion on it or the info I am going to put up. Range finders are a wonderful conception, but I just don't need it out to at least 300, and any rifleman worth his salt shouldn't either, I just see them as another piece of kit to lug around and as a hunter an individual could come to rely on a battery powered device way too much, bit like the GPS, how many people can still truly navigate with a map and compass. In a lot of hunting situations there is just not the time to range to the target with this device, the bino/rangefinder combination may be worth a look though No doubt you will go through my post and make sure I have dotted all the T's and crossed the I's and will have a wonderful retort full of superfulous rubbish, look forward to it, I like a good laugh, just don't tell me I am wrong on this, my advice is borne out of straight experience. Perhaqps you need to get out for a hunt and rid yourself of all that pent up anger and gain a little experience. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
I think you guys need to calm down! FJ - Deker AFAIK is saying that while the football pitch method is used, it's not precise because of potential variances in pitch size. This is a valid point but most of the time the variance is slight. Possibly slightly pedantic, BUT. Not liking the method doesn't make anyone less experienced in the field - other methods can be used, and indeed are used. Also, over here anything over 300 yards is a long way and most permissions don't have shots that far to be taken, or if they do they are certainly not common place. Deker - FJ I think is just saying that the method works for him, and it is a valid method, even though on paper football fields can be different sizes. IMHO this has gone on a bit long now and is very heated for what amounts to two experienced field shooters disagreeing over a way to range a target. One thing I will say though is that 'any rifleman worth his salt shouldn't need a range finder to 300 yards' frankly is crap. If you're using a flat shooting calibre, no, you won't. But, anything with a more loopy trajectory may need accuracy to within 10 yards and out at 250 yards being +- 10 accurate is rare. If you can do it, congrats. However, I count myself in the 'worth his salt' category, and I find my range finder very helpful indeed. Also, 22 RF shots out at 140 yards, need to know if it's 140 or 145, the bullet is dropping very fast indeed. So they have their uses! Quote Link to post
FJager 0
Deker just enjoys quoting my posts back to me mate, that's all, wasn't even me that bought the footy field concept up, I just agreed, but I think he gets of on arguing with me, whatever rocks his boat, probably had his lunches stolen from him as a kid. Deker 3,478
Deker just enjoys quoting my posts back to me mate, that's all, wasn't even me that bought the footy field concept up, I just agreed, but I think he gets of on arguing with me, whatever rocks his boat, probably had his lunches stolen from him as a kid. Lets get this straight...I am not looking for an arguement with you or anyone, but if you misquote me or invent things altogether that I have not said then I am going to get really p****d off. Second...Mr L has a point and this is all getting a little silly. Third...... I DON'T HAVE A RANGE FINDER, just a lot of experience, but I shoot with people that often do, and my distance estimation when checked against the rangefinders is "usually" pretty close. With regard my hunting ability..it is well documented with threads and pictures on this site, but this is a complete red herring again...so what if I have shot 10 deer or 100 this year, someone will always do better or worse. I am also a Deer Mentor (I don't now how either, but I am). If you consider this some sort of a competition perhaps you should stick to the range as you have suggested I do! I will continue to learn in this shooting business, and there are plenty of people that have helped me over the years! Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Peace has broken out On the subject of rangefinders. If anyone is interested in Leicas I know where to get them at very good prices. No, I don't sell them or know the guy who does but I've had a few very good deals with him. If I were to buy the CRF 900 here in Ireland it would be 750, got mine for 280. Slight mistake on price. 750 refers to the CRF 1200 this year not the CRF 900, I presume going on American prices the CRF 900 would be 650 Euro, as it was last year. Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
thats a good price john i payed nearly 500 euro for the scanmaster 1200............... is this an irish supplier............as if so do they do anything else Quote Link to post
FJager 0
On a serious note lads, don't you find carrying all that kit around annoying? If you have a smartarse answer don't answer this, it is a genuine question and I am interested in your thoughts. Cheers Quote Link to post

Nope, mine has a case that goes on my belt. I don't know if you've used or held a Leica CRF but they're seriously small. Never gets in my way to be honest. Now if I was to be bringing out my NV monocular and bins as well as the rifle, lamp, battery etc that would be a PITA, but I'm selective about what I bring, where and why. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Mine sits on my belt or in a pocket. Never gets in the way, worth its weight in gold. Quote Link to post
Rentomski 0
Rangefinder??? Why? Zero your 243/270/308 etc at 2" high at 100 yards and it will be a case of aiming direct up to 225 yards 'ish. I would not attempt a shot beyond that range, especially on Roe. The last doe I shot was about 190 yards away and that was a very long shot. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Range finders are not just used on deer... Quote Link to post

Cheers They are very useful and are getting smaller now as well, but most are still "expensive"! Was out last night and checked several of my range estimates against shooting buddies rangefinder.....heartening to know I can still get it pretty close, I would still buy one if they got a bit smaller and cheaper though! ...they are worth their weight in gold and I find them very useful,..... when your shooting partner is carrying it!!! Deker 3,478
Range finders are not just used on deer... That is actually a very valid point......someone mentioned it earlier...may well have been you!!!..... Why does everyone get all excited about using them on shots 2-3-400 yards away, they are also very useful on much closer quarry when using the rimmy, especially .22LR Subs when sometimes just 10 yards can make a couple of inches difference in a shot! It is not that uncommon for the air rifle boys to use them either!!! Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Like anything using them is a personal choice. I don't always use mine but at certain times I find it very useful. I've shot a fox I thought was no more than 120 yards away, he was across a lake from me. Next day when I went to pick him up, nope, couldn't find him. Gave up eventually and started back a sheep path, 50 yards later there he was fell over exactly where I had shot him, not 120 yards away but 170. Didn't make a difference to the .223 but a different calibre may have been a wound not a kill. either way, if you're happy doing things the way you do them then carry on Quote Link to post
