Just been out for a walk, and came across a fallen tree, inside was all this honey comb like wood, it looked almost like it had been drilled. I think it was some kind of insect/bee, wrasp, but not sure.

Any idea's folks ??

Many thanks.

Theres a few felled trees around locally like that Nealey, the larger holes look like those I have watched woodpeckers make as they search for grubs or insects.

Hi don't think any holes are woodpecker mate, this is right in side/middle of the tree, the out side is solid. I'll go back with my camera and take some moore pics of the whole tree, might shed some moore light on the subject ?

You often find these "Honeycomb" type finds........after they have been ripped open by badgers in search of the grubs that have bored out the holes from the inside.

Usually it is the Sawfly or Wood Wasp that deposits its eggs deeep into the rotten wood and then the grubs grow and eat their way out..........thus leaving the tell tale holes from which they emerged. Here is a picture of a similar construction after being ripped apart by a foraging badger.

Im with you on this one rolfe. Ive come across loads like that over time.

This belonged to a massive colony of bees. The hollow was roughly 8" diameter and the comb was about 8' long.

Just bloody pleased it wasnt active when i climbed the tree to take it down :icon_eek:
