Deer Dog

bavarian mountain blood hounds are the future, i only have limited experience with them (a week with a mate in germany doing helping with a culling opperation on 3 estates) but they were brilliant. the ones i saw worked from 7 till 5 for 5 days out of 6, they pointed, marked, chased and pulled deer down when directed. the sence of smell is second to non: i saw one mark out the exact line in a wounded red deer the day after it was hit, take that line 7-800 yards, put up the hind, chase it for a hundred yards, pull it down and keep it pinned/ at bay until we got there to dispatch it :notworthy: . incredible.

i was warned though that they can be buggers as they will pick up the wind of a bitch on heat a decent few miles away and be off.

from that week, if i was in the possition to get another dog, and thought i would have enough stalking to warrant it - it woul dbe a bavarian mountain bloodhound anyday....sadly i'm not.

please explain what a deer dog does for you over there. here they push them out of the nasty thick cover and the hunter tries to position himself in front of the race for a shot. we use mostly foxhounds, beagles and their mixes for this.

the so called "schweisshunde", i.e. bavarian mountain hound and the hanover hound, are used solely for tracking down wounded animals, the bavarian for all deer and boar, the hanover only for boar, red- sika- and fallowdeer. most of these dogs are owned by foresters who have enough time on their hands.

for flushing out deer or boar of the thick we use dogs that hunt loud and are rather small. the aim is to have a dog that just annoys the game so it leaves the hide slowly. breeds that are commonly used for that are the german hunt terrier and the german spaniel. but also other terrier breeds

I am looking to get a deer dog and i really like the Bavarian Mountain Hound, what do people know about them? Thanks

what exactly do you want the dog to do?

they are bred for working after the shot, i.e. trailing wounded game.

I want a dog to track a wounded deer should the case arise. Thanks Jon
