Are these just hunting curs or some other sort of breed? especially the first one. looks like a lean golden retriever.

unlike the fat, and hairy AKC goldens i'm used to seeing.. i like this ones looks!

The shaggy one is a full blooded July hound. Not all Julys are shaggy, In fact it is kind of rare. The gyp on the bottom is 3/4 july 1/4 running walker. I use the running hounds on coyotes. The ones with the squirrels are curs.

I know I've read somewhere before about curs, but for the sake of me who can't remember  and anyone else who wants to know: what exactly are they, and how did they originate. They look handy little dogs.

I'll give it try, a;though there are people that are way more knowledgeable tha I on this subject. The strains that most folks over here use on tree game are remenants of the dogs the early settelers kept, Although I am pretty confident they don't look very similar any more. "Cur" is a pretty vauge term when it comes to dogs. I can hook ya up with a website or 2 that revolve around the treedog strains of curs if ya like.

Wow only place i ever heard about a July hound was when i was with some old folks. i forget exactly how it was brought up. we were on a camping trip with the horses when a hound took up with us, following along.. was owned by the man who also owned the property where we were camping. one of the old guys we were riding with said it was a July Hound.

:icon_eek: wow that was forever ago!

and what you said is true about the curs. there are Mountain Curs, Black Mouth Curs... Curs used for hogs, squirrel, raccoon, deer, you name it. just an all around old fashioned hunting dog that can do anything you ask of it.

i think its, historically, a mix of scent hound, shepherd(collie?), and bulldog. again, as you said, what ever the settlers brought with them from across the sea. depending where you go, there's some that look more beagle than bull, and some more collie than hound..

but they look just like that.. a cur. some people have bred them to a standard, BMCs for example, but really, they're so varied it would be like trying to round up all the lurchers on this site and trying to put them into slots for kennel club book keeping purposes.
