Absolutely stunning dogs there roan,i do like they scottish deerhounds as a breed but as someone said earlier its harder now to get the right type with KC doing there best to feck up another good working breed...most i see now are more of the size of the irish wolfhound, its a bit unfortunate aswell that the best lines are to be found in Ireland and not their native land where they were originally bred and worked for centuries but at least the good uns are still out there doing a bit of work instead of being pranced about a show ring....good on you pal and best of luck with them

nice one gaz ya with our help there on the way back all the dogs are tested as one would a lurcher testing them against lurchers and deerhounds throuhout the season no dog that is not up to grade is kept ie they are rehomed to pet homes and nutered its the only way we can keep these great hunting dogs going theres about 4 of us who are all passionate about the breed as a working dog.

in general the bitches are better on hare and rabbit due to their size and the dogs better on bigger game mind you the bitches are generally very capable at this too

although the breed do lack the take off gears of a high grey blooded lurcher and this can be an issue when coursing hare in small fields however once in they are suprisingly hard to shake

the nose is a real asset for rough hunting and the male dog i have at present has a great ability to hunt up game where other dogs will pass over he rarely is wrong at this and i often wonder how much game i woukd pass without him

i will try get up some pictures of them in action

Aye some pics of the mighty deerhounds in action would be good to see roan..looking forward to them

Ive had a few lurchers that have a bit of deerhound blood in their veins and ive got on very well with them aswell infact one of my lurchers at present is 1/4 deerhound from his dams side (Doxhope and Ardkinglass lines) and he was doing well for his young age until he picked up a foot injury at the turn of the year but fingers crossed he should be raring to go come the start of this coming season.

One of the most magestic memories of a dog running was a deerhound about 10 years ago now and it wasnt even on the arse of anything,i was just off a beach one grey miserable winters day when me and my bro were taking a bit of time out from a mouch with the dogs puffing away on a ciggie, when a fella came thundering down the shoreline on a nice speciman of a horse but along side him was his deerhound in full flight matching the horse stride for stride....the best way i can describe those couple of minutes was breathtaking,a scene imprinted my brain for life :drink:

:clapper: Too right Gaz,...

I've witnessed a similar scenario when a Bedouin trotted past me in the Sahara,...his Saluki was a few steps in front of him,...what a fecking sight,...I only wish I could of straightened up and spoken to him...

Sadly,.at the time ,.I was hunched down behind a sand dune,....luckily the guy on the camel was a true gent,..and wisely looked away.... :icon_eek:

AS for Scottish Deerhounds,...

Is there any better looking type of running dog..... :notworthy:

My old Deerhound hybrid,.Lucy',...was a great help to me in the early days,.in fact,.she paid the Mortgage

Beautiful images Roan,...lets see some more ... :drink:

All the best,.CHALKWARREN...
